３年振り位に両親とドライブに行った。
母親が今日は調子がいいと言うので気晴らしに行こうという事になりドライバーを買って出たのだ。
山間部に行こうとなったのでとりあえず松江方面を目指した。
行き先はどこでもいいと母が言ったので、以前も訪れた事のある菅谷たたらに行く事になった。
吉田ICを降りて吉田の街をブラブラ、川の石は鉄分が多いからか赤っぽい。

川のほとりには昔ここで鍛冶作業していた家が残っていた。
こういう歴史的な建物を見るとここで何を思いながら仕事をしていたのかなあとつい想像してしまう。

そこから５分位車で走ると菅谷たたらはある。３年位前に来た時と違って痛みの激しい所を修復してあって随分キレイになっていた。

GWという事もあって結構人が来ていた。ここでも人々が鉄を作り生活をしていたのだなあとまた感慨にふけった。昔の遺構めぐりは大好きだ。
母も空気が良いのでどんどん調子が良くなる気がすると言ったので嬉しかった。

新緑も綺麗だったし両親ともたくさん話が出来て楽しい１日だった。

今日は天気がいいので久しぶりにドリームでツーリングに行った。
たまに乗ると面白い！！どこに行くとは決めないで出たが、結局忠海の黒滝山に登った。
景色は最高でつくづくいい所に住んでいるなあと実感した。
ドリームは春になるとマフラーを変える事にしている。
ヨシムラのマフラーは性能は良いのだが、マフラーの水抜き穴が無い為
特に冬場は水が中にたまりやすくどんどん錆びて穴が開いてくる。
その為冬場はノーマルマフラーにしている訳だ。
ノーマルも捨てたものではない。まず排気音が静かなのでエンジンのキュリーンという
高回転のいい音が聞けるし、振動も少ない。抜けが悪いのでそこら辺がストレスではあるが・・・・。

黒滝山に登るのは５～６回目だが今日も気持ちが良かった。もうセミが鳴いていた。
林を抜ける時は毛虫がこの時期はたくさんぶら下がっているのでそれだけはいただけなかったが。
頂上近くには鎖場もあって楽しい。

黒滝山は乃木大将も登った事のある歴史のある山だ。
僕の人生なんて長い山の歴史に比べるとあっという間の時間でしかない。
そんな事を思いながら山を下りる時考えた。その時思ったのはもう５２歳な訳だが、僕という人間の魂は２０歳の頃と比べて見てもほとんど変わっていないなあという事だった。良くも悪くも変わっていないなあと思った。
７０歳になったらどう思うだろうか？あんまり変わらない気がする。２０歳の頃５０過ぎのおっさん見たとき随分と（見かけが変わっている様に）内面的なものは変わっているのだろうなと思ったものだがいざ自分がなってみて思うのはいやいや若い頃と魂はほとんど変わってない。
そんな事を思った１日だった。夕方帰って来てからまた自転車でトレーニングした。この所夕方はほぼ１日おき位に乗っている。ちょっとずつ昔の体力に戻って来ているなと感じる。

先日土方歳三の子孫の方に会った。
実は彼と会うのは２回目になる。以前仕事でかれの店に行った事があったのだった。アクセスバーズというのをを習いに行った時そこで彼とは再会した。
初めに彼の店http://komorinokaki.jimdo.com/で講習を受けた後、午後は彼の家に行かせてもらった。
ねこや犬がいる楽しい家だった。古いジュークボックスがあって、まあいい音を聞かせてもらった。また今度呉で飲もうと言って別れた。

今日は嬉しいびっくりする事があった。坂本龍馬さんが家に来たのだ！
お昼をこれから食べようとしていた１時すぎ、ピンポーンとドアホンが鳴った。
出てみるとどこかで会った顔。えっと、誰だったっけ？と２秒ほど考えて思い出した。
彼は僕の住む呉市から１００ｋｍ位離れた所に住んでいる大西さんだった。
何十年ぶりかで呉市に観光に来たので寄ってみたとの事だった。覚えてくれていたのだ。嬉しかった！
彼は福山の鞆の浦で坂本龍馬に扮して鞆の浦の魅力をボランティアで案内している人だ。
鞆の浦は僕が大好きな古い街だ。２年前一人でバイクで鞆の浦に行った時の話だ。
坂本龍馬が隠れ家として利用した桝谷清右衛門宅に見学に行ったときに初めてお会いした、というか彼はそこに居た。
この桝谷清右衛門宅はずっと非公開だったのだがようやく公開になったのだった。
時代が激動する中で龍馬が持っていた気持ちを感じてみたいと思って訪れたのだった。
その時の龍馬にまつわる話を聞かせて頂き大層面白かった。
僕も龍馬やら幕末の志士が好きで高知にいた時は武市半平太や中岡慎太郎の家に行ったし、京都の中書島の寺田屋や龍馬の墓にも行った。
彼はヒュー・ジャックマン主演のウルヴァリンの映画にもエキストラで出たとの事でヒューの生写真もくれた。
それから年賀をやり取りはしたが会ったのは一度きりだったのに覚えてくれていて寄ってくれたのだった。
ヤマトミュージアムへの道を彼は僕に尋ねたが、僕は今の桜の時期絶対に大崎上島の御手洗に行った方が良いとアドバイスした。彼はそうすると言って車に乗って去って行った。
こんな事があるんだなあと不思議な気がした。が彼の取ってくれた行動が嬉しかった。
僕が逆の立場だったら行くかな？よっぽど目的地に近くて住所覚えていたら
行くかもしれないがそんなに思い出さないと思う。
まあ嬉しかったな。こういうハプニング早々ないけど、自分も急に来てもらって嬉しいと言われる様になりたいものだ。
そういえば、面白い事が続くもので今度４月９日には土方歳三の子孫の方と会う事になっているらしい。
幕末の志士つながりだが、これも何かしら縁だろう。

「──イチ…イチ…ケンイチ…」

「……ン…？」

……誰？……

「──ケンイチ、大丈夫？」誰かが呼んでる！

だが意識だけがどこかへ出かけてしまったみたいだ。真っ白な空間に身体だけが浮かんでいるような気がする。声のした方に顔を回らすと、四角い出口のようなモノが見えた気がした。なんだろうと思ったとたん、意識が目にシンクロした。

「ケンイチ、良かった。気が付いたのネ。」

「おおげさよ！弱っちいわね。水でも掛けりゃあすぐにスッキリするわ」

───み、水？冗談だろ……うーっクラクラする！

「───や、やめ…ろ…」

賢一が根性で目をこじ開けると、目の前に大きな青いガラスの目玉があった。

「う、うひゃあ！！」

「大丈夫？」

フランス人形が陶器でできた顔を賢一に更に近づけた。

「う、うん、だ、大丈夫」

───そ、そうか、ゆ、夢じゃなかったんだ……

やっぱ、こ、この子、に、人形なんだ…… ドキドキしながら賢一は返事をした。

───ビ、ビスクドールは間近で見ちゃだめだな。

２、３度頭を振って大きく深呼吸してみる。ドキドキも少し落ち着いてきた。薄暗い部屋をグルッと見渡すと、少し離れたところに、老婦人に変身したメリッサがショーの時の温和な雰囲気は微塵もなく、不機嫌そうに立っているのが分かった。 そうか、メリッサに会えたんだな、とボーッとそんな事を考えているとメリッサがイライラしたように言った。

「ちょっと！いつまで待たせる気？いい加減にしてよ！時間がないのよ」

「メリッサ、すぐにはムリよ。初めて飛んだんだから」

賢一を助け起こそうと、ローズは小さな手でウントコ、ウントコ引っ張った。

「いいよ。大丈夫だ。自分で起きれる。ありがとう」

賢一は、まだフラフラする身体をもう一度深呼吸をして整え、ゆっくりと立ち上がった。 改めて辺りを見回す、古くさいテーブルとイスがたくさんある。使われなくなってずい分経つのだろうホコリがすごかった。倉庫と言うより廃墟に近い。

メリッサはこれ見よがしに溜め息をつくと、さっさと出入口へむかい扉のカギを開けた。彼女がそのまま出ていこうとしたので、賢一は慌てて声を掛けた。

「あッ！あの…エッと…メ…メリッサ…さ…さん？」 メリッサは面倒くさそうに振り返った。

「その…しゃべらないから…僕、あ、あなた達の事…絶対誰にも言わないから安心して…ホントだよ」

「……」

「ええっと、そ、それじゃあ。僕帰るよ」

「はあ？」メリッサは額にシワを作った。

「帰る？何、言ってんのよ！この荷物どうするのよ」

「へ？」

「へ？じゃあないでしょ！か弱い女の子に運ばせる気？」

───か弱い女の子？ どこから見てもお婆さんにしか見えないメリッサが、両手を腰に仁王立ちしている。賢一は、思わずプッと吹き出した。

「な、何よ！何笑ってるのよ！」

「い、いや、それを言うなら、か弱いお婆さんだと思って」

メリッサの白い顔がみるみる真っ赤になった。

「ご、ごめん。」賢一はメリッサが何か言う前に、慌てて謝った。

「そ、そうだね。でも、大き過ぎてこのままだと運ぶの無理だと思うけど──」

その時、カウンターの奥の方からローズの呼ぶ声がした。

「メリッサ、ケンイチ、ちょっと来て」

声のした方を見に行くと、小ぶりの台車を見付けたローズが、乗せてあったダンボール箱をどかそうと奮闘していた。

「これで、荷物を運べるんじゃないかと思って。メリッサは魔法使っちゃあダメだしネ」

「へえ、キミ、頭いいよ。そこどいて僕が動かすから。これなら運べるよ」

賢一は笑ったことで、ずいぶん落ち着いて来た。

ダンボール箱を下ろしてメリッサのトランクを乗せると、ヒョイとローズがその上に飛び乗った。トランクの上にちょこんと座った姿は、少し大きめの普通のフランス人形にしか見えない。

オープンカフェまでの移動中、賢一は面白くて何度も笑いそうになり、その度にメリッサに睨まれることになった。台車が大きく揺れる度に、ローズが微妙に身体を動かしてバランスをとっているのだ。座ったままサーフィンしてるみたいだ。

 

通用口に着いたのは、ショー開始のおよそ十分前だった。 入口で、店長が鬼のような形相で時計を気にしながら待っていた。

「ОＨ！遅れてスミマセン。事故ありましたネ！それとアシスタントをヤトイマシタ。荷物、カレが運ぶネ。だから店長さんОＫネ」

メリッサは店長が文句をいう前に、わざとたどたどしい日本語で身振り手振り捲くし立て、彼にニッコリ笑い掛けた。

───事故？よくいうよ！……ん？アシスタント？なんだそれ？

胡散臭そうに見つめる店長の前を、賢一は作り笑いを浮べ荷物を運んだ。

楽屋として使っているスタッフルームにトランクを運び入れると、メリッサはローズを隅に置いてある椅子に座らせた。

あの廃墟と化した喫茶店から、完璧に普通の人形のフリをしている。手をダランと垂らし、背もたれに身体をあずけている。こうして見ていると、やっぱり普通の人形じゃないかと思ってしまう。

視線を感じたのか、ローズはちょっとウィンクしてみせた。

昔の映画特集で、人形が邪悪な命を得て人間を襲い出すというのがあったが、ローズから邪悪さや恐怖───さっきは突然目の前に迫ったからびっくりしただけだ──は感じない。ただ、ガラスの目がクルクル動いたり、陶器で出来ているであろう顔に、滑らかな表情が出来るところが不思議だった。

───食事なんかも出来るのかなぁ……

賢一は、空洞の身体の中に未消化の食べ物がいっぱい詰まっているのを想像して、キモチ悪くなった。

こんなとんでもない事が目の前で起きているのに、時間が経つに連れてこの状況に慣れてくる自分に、賢一は驚いていた。

メリッサのショーに出くわすまでは、毎日が無意味でやたらと長く、それなのに何かに追われるような妙に焦りを感じる日々だった。

しかし、彼女を捜し出すという目的が一日の時間の流れを半分に縮小し、エキサイティングな日々に変えた。

入り口の側に突っ立って、忙しく動き回るメリッサを見ていると、計り知れない何かの力が、自分とメリッサを引き寄せたようだと賢一は勝手に思った。

──エキサイティングを通り越してちょっとぶっ飛び過ぎてはいるけどネ！しかし、どう見てもストーカーだったな

賢一は今までの事を思い出し苦笑した。

「ケンイチ！」

賢一はハッと我に返った。

「突っ立ってないで、準備、てつだいなさいよ！」

メリッサが睨んでいた。 何だか賢一は急にムカムカしてきた

──なんか、ずっと怒られてばっかじゃないか？

「なんだよ！荷物、運んでやったじゃないか、それに、何？あのヘンな日本語！普通にしゃべれるじゃないか」

頭の中で元の姿を想像しながら、どう見てもお婆さんにしか見えないメリッサに、言い返した。

「片言の外国人って便利がいいのよ。そういう人に日本人は弱いから。それより、ワタシのアシスタントでしょ！手伝うのが当たり前！」

「どうして僕がアシスタントなんだよ。誰が決め──」

「言ってたわよ店長『お弟子さんになりたいという青年が、会わせてくれと言ってます』って、あれ、あなただったんでしょ？」

「そんなこと言ってない！店長が勝手に……そりゃあメリッサの弟子なら悪くないけど、メリッサが君だとは知らなかったし、メリッサは素晴らしいけど、メリッサの君は……えーっと……」

何が言いたいのか、何を言っているのか分からなくなってきた。

「とにかく！僕はアシスタントじゃない、だいたい、魔法使いの弟子ってなんだよ。」

「シャラップ！」

メリッサは慌ててドアのところへ飛んでいくと、聞き耳を立てた。賢一は思わず両手で自分の口を塞いだ。

「軽々しく何言ってんのよ。まったく！パパはどうして記憶修正しなかったのよ！」

プリプリしながらメリッサは、トランクの中から変わったポットを取り出した。

「それは何？」

「何って、アロマポットよ」

見れば分かるでしょうと、メリッサは忙しげに魔法のカバンの中をチェックし、小型のテーブルを組み立てるように当然のように賢一に命令した。 賢一がしぶしぶ手を動かし始めると、メリッサは満足したように「さあ！」と息を吸い込みニッコリ微笑だ。

「そろそろ出番よ！」

マジックショーはやっぱり素晴らしかった。 老人とは思えない見事な手さばき（老人じゃないけど）まったくタネも仕掛けも分からない（当然だ。タネも仕掛けもない！）一流のマジックだ。

何故だろう毎回思うのだが、メリッサのショーを見ると優しい気持ちになる。忘れていた懐かしい思い出が蘇ってくるような、暖かい気分になるのだ。 あのメリッサからどうしてこんな暖かいショーが生まれるのか、不思議でならない。

賢一は、客席の端の方でショーを見ていた。 先ほど嗅いだあの不思議な香りが、店中に漂っている。今まで気付かなかったが、ショーの時にはいつも焚いているらしい。ステージの隅っこにセットする時に、ローズがこっそり教えてくれた。

そのローズは今『オズの魔法使い』に登場するチップ少年に扮している。 彼女の背中には、飾りのゼンマイがこれみよがしにゆっくりと回っている。

メリッサは、カバンから小さな人形を取り出した。ブリキの木こり、カカシ…後はなんだっけ……そう、ライオンだ。 その人形達に黒い布をすっぽりと被せ、メリッサがワン・ツー・スリーで布を剥ぎ取ると、ローズくらいの大きさに変わった。

更に杖を振ると、彼らは勝手に踊りだした。

彼らのコミカルな動きを見て、観客がドッと湧いた。

次にメリッサはライオンの縫いぐるみだけをサッと掴むと、どこから取り出したのか動物用の小さな檻に入れた。 彼女は人指し指を立てて、観客にシーっとニッコリと笑った。 黒い布を被せる。緊張を高める音楽に合わせて、最初はゆっくりと、そして勢い良く布をめくった。

そこには、本物のライオンがいた。子供のライオンだが、間違いなく本物だ。 観客がワッと声をあげた。

ライオンの子供は、自分がどうしてここにいるのか分からない様子でキョロキョロし、すぐに檻の隅で怯えたようにギャオギャオ泣き始めた。 賢一は皆と同じように歓声を上げたが、すぐにマズイ事に気が付いた。

───どっから連れてきたんだ？あのライオン。

本来マジックにはタネも仕掛けもある。ある物をないように見せ、無い物をあるように見せる。そのテクニックの優劣がマジシャンの価値を決める。 どんなに優れたマジシャンでも、仕掛けのないところからは何も出せない。 動物を使うショーでは、予めその動物をどこかに隠しておく必要がある。

今回、賢一達が動物を連れて来なかったという事をここの店長は知っている。

賢一は自分の斜め右にいる店長を、そっと盗み見た。 店長は皆と同じように拍手をしているが、どこか腑に落ちないという表情をしているように思えた。

今まで、観客以外の人には、どういうふうに誤魔化していたのだろう。 賢一は、以前とは違いハラハラしながらショーを見始めた。

その気持ちが伝わったのか、メリッサは早々に登場人物達を、絵本に戻し始めた。 きこり、かかしと続いてライオンの番になった。 檻に敷いてあった毛布は、噛み付かれ引っ掻かれて、今やボロ雑巾のようにズタズタだ。ショー用に調教された動物とは、到底思えない。

しかし、観客には大うけだった。

布で檻をおおっても、中で暴れているのだろうガタガタ揺れている。やがて静かになって布をパッとめくると、檻ごと消失していた。

最後に『オズの魔法使い』の主人公チップ少年を炎で包み煙に変えると、中から可愛らしいオズマ姫となって現れた。

「カワイイ！」

「あの人形、人間みたい！」

「スゴッ！ぜんっぜん分かんねぇ！」

「どうやってんの！信じられなーい！」

「超すげーッ！ほとんど魔法じゃん！」

客たちは口々にワーワー言っている。

───魔法みたい、じゃなくて魔法だし！あの人形はなぁ、人間みたいにしゃべるんだ。もちろん人間みたいに動くし……

賢一は大興奮する観客に混じって、複雑な気持ちで拍手していた。

ショーがフィナーレを迎え、ウエイターやウエイトレス達がテーブルの上を片付け始めた。観客たちはメリッサと握手しようと、前につめかけている。

早く荷物を片付けてしまおうと、賢一はスタッフルームへと急いだ。 途中であのおしゃべりなウエイターに捕まり「おめでとう。アシスタントになれたんですネ」とニコニコしながら話し掛けられた。

「ま、まあ。どうも…」

賢一は曖昧に頷き、衝立の後ろにあるスタッフルームの中に入っていった。

トランクに小道具類を片付けていると、メリッサ達が戻ってきた。

「ヘーッ！感心、感心。自分から片付けているなんて、自分の立場が──」

「ライオンはさあ。」

賢一はメリッサの言葉を遮っていった。

「ライオンはまずいんじゃあないのか？」

「？ウケてたじゃない。やっぱり本物じゃないとね」

「そうじゃなくて！どこから来たのかってことさ」

「どこって、そんなの動物園に決まってるじゃない。」

メリッサは平然と答えた。

「そう言う事じゃなくて！あのさぁ、マジックにはタネと仕掛けがあるだろ。普通」

───マジシャン相手に何を言ってるんだ僕は……

苛立ちを覚えながら、賢一はまだキョトンとしているメリッサに言った。

「だからさ！ライオン！ここに連れてきてないだろう！仕掛けてないのに、何もないところから出せないだろう、普通は！」

「イヤねぇ。ワタシはマジシャンなのよ」

「だ、か、ら！どんなに優秀なマジシャンでも、タネを仕込んでるの！仕掛けがあるの！普通のマジシャンはテクニックで突然現れたように見せてるだけなの！」

賢一は呼吸を整え少し声を落として続けた。

「店長は、僕らがライオンなんか連れてこなかったのを知ってる。絶対ヘンだと思ってる。運んだのはトランクだけだった。どこから出したのってさ。」

「……さっきヘンな顔してたんだ、何か腑に落ちないって……そんな顔してたんだ」

「そんなの大丈夫よ」とメリッサは真剣に話す賢一に笑いながら言った。

「今までバレなかったし。それに、人はね自分の見てきた事しか受け入れられない生き物なの。不可思議な事であればあるほど、なんとかして科学的な回答を出そうとする。たとえ、本物の魔法を目撃しても、そんな事あるわけないって。

中世の時代ならともかく、どんな映像も作り出せる世の中よ。パパは心配性なのよ。店長だって今頃、都合のイイ答えで勝手に自分を納得させてるわよ」

メリッサは自信たっぷりに言ったが、賢一にはそう思えなかった。

「でも、僕は分かったじゃないか」

「ケンイチだって、ショーしか知らなかった時はおかしいとは思わなかったでしょ？たまたまショー以外で見ちゃったから、怪しいと思っただけで」

「すごいマジックを見たら、誰でもその種明かしを知りたがるもんだよ。ある意味、僕だって自分の見た事の謎解きをするために、キミを追いかけたんだから。僕だったらキミの持ち物を少しでも見れるチャンスがあるなら、見ようとするな。だって仕掛け知りたいし。店長も──」

ドアをノックする音がした。

「あのォ…」噂をすればなんとか「そろそろスタッフルームを使用したいんですが」店長の声だ。

「すみません。後五分ほどで終わります」 賢一は大きな声で答え「とにかく、ヘンな疑いは今のうちにはらっとくべきだよ」と小さな声でメリッサに言った。

「で、じゃあどうすればいいの？」 メリッサは面倒くさそうに言った。

「そうだなあ……もう一回あのライオンだしてくれない？ここに」

こんな事しなくてもいいのに、とぶつくさ言いながら、メリッサは睨む賢一に「ハイハイ」と溜め息をつき杖を取り出した。

「どうぞ」と言うなりドアが開いた。

店長の探るような顔が見えた時、賢一は暴れるライオンの子供をなんとか抱っこしようと奮闘していた。

店長の驚いた顔を確認し、賢一がホッとした瞬間、手が少し緩んだらしい。ライオンの子供がスルリと腕から飛び降りた。 賢一が慌てて追い掛けると、ライオンは狭いスタッフルーム中を逃げ回った。　そして、唖然としている店長めがけ突進していった。

店長は悲鳴を上げてドアから飛び出し、ものすごい勢いでドアを閉めた。

賢一がやっとライオンを捕まえた時、店長の叫び声を聞きつけた従業員達の心配する声が、店内に通じるドアの向こうから聞こえた。

「店長！どうしました？」「店長！」

「す、すみません！ライオンが…大丈夫ですからッ！今、檻に入れました！」　賢一はドア越しに大声で叫んだ。

しかし、従業員達のざわめきがドアから遠のいてくれない。店長が戻って来ていないからだろうか。

しかたなく、メリッサが店内への扉を少し開け顔を覗かせた。

「ゴメンナサイ。ウチの子、ちょーっとコウフンしたみたいネ…あぁ店長さん」 裏から回って来た店長は、息をハアハアしながら店内に入ったとたん、その場に座り込んだ。顔が青ざめている。

お客たちも何事かと集まってきていた。

「荷物、もう運び出したです。では、店長さん、明日はサイシュウの日です。ヨロシクお願いします」

メリッサは、従業員に両側から支えてもらっている店長に、ニッコリ笑い掛けてゆっくりとドアを閉めた。

子ライオンは通用口を出てからも、檻の中で暴れていた。

いつの間にか台車が大きくなっている。しかし、がたがたと激しく揺れる檻がものすごく不安定だった。

店の窓から視線を感じる。

───かわいそうに！早いとこコイツを返さなきゃ！

訳の分からん場所にいきなり連れてこられたライオンに同情し、横で平気な顔をしているメリッサをチラリと見た。賢一は思いっきり溜め息をつき、檻にカバーを掛けた。

台車を押して店の表側に回ると、さっきまでショーを見ていた客が数人、店の前で立ち話をしていた。

彼らは賢一達に気付くと、ヤバイと思う前にワッと寄ってきた。

「ワーッ！魔法使いのお婆さんダ！」

「マジックショー素晴らしかったです！」

「本当に、魔法みたいでした」

「最高でした！」

「コレ、ショーの人形ですよね。近くで見る　と大きいですね！」 口々にしゃべるので、賢一にはただのワーワーにしか聞こえなかった。

───マズイな。これじゃあぜんぜん動けない！

そう思ったとき、突然人混みから小さな手がスッと伸びて、ローズのスカートをギュッと掴んだ。

「ダメ！」賢一は思わずローズを引き寄せた。

三歳くらいの女の子が、手を突き出し、引きつった表情で賢一を見上げたまま固まっている。

「すみません！ダメじゃないの！勝手にさわっちゃあ！」母親らしき女性が慌てて謝った。

「ほらっ！ごめんなさいして！」

「あっ！い、い、いえ……その、この人形は…その……」

賢一はローズを抱え、どうしたらいいのか焦りながらメリッサを見た。

「お人形スキですか？」 メリッサはしゃがんで子供の目線に合わせると、優しい眼差しで話し掛けた。

女の子は、涙を溜めてコクリと頷いた。メリッサはローズを賢一から受け取ると、女の子の手をとり、ローズの頭にソッとのせてやった。

「ほーら。イイ子、イイ子してアゲテクダサイ。この子、名前ローズいいます。アナタお名前は？」

「……みき…」

「ОＫミキちゃん。ローズをギューしてあげてクダサイ！よろこびます。」

女の子はオズオズしながらも、嬉しそうにローズをギュッと抱きしめた。ローズの方が背が高いので、ちょっと見たら妹がおねえちゃんに抱きついているように見える。

母親が「よかったネ」と娘に言うのと、ライオンが再びギャーっと叫ぶのが同時だった。

───そうだったライオン！

こんなところでグズグズしている場合ではなかった。

早くなんとかしないと、そう思った時、すぐ近くで車のクラクションが鳴った。

音のした方へ顔をやると、サングラスを掛けた男性が車の中から手を振っていた。

───誰だ？

賢一が眉をひそめていると、周りにいる何人かがヒソヒソ囁き始めた。

「あれって、もしかしてサ……」

「──そうよォ、たぶん…」

「あの、テレビによく出てる？」

「シャドー！」とメリッサがその男性に向かって片手をあげた。

賢一がポカンとしていると、サングラスの男が車から降りてきた。

「やあ！メリッサ！久しぶりだね」 その男がサングラスを外してにこやかに笑うと、キャーという歓声とともに賢一は脇に押しやられた。

彼はいかにも慣れた感じで、ついさっきまでメリッサを取り囲んでいたギャラリー達と握手し出した。

サングラス外し、にこやかに握手する姿を見て、賢一はようやく彼が誰なのか思い出した。 『ミスター・シャドー』今話題のマジシャン。

イギリス人と日本人とのハーフで、その甘いマスクとトークで圧倒的な女性の支持を得ている。

シャドーはギャラリー達に愛想を振りまきながら、メリッサに近づいて来た。

「ジェフリーと久しぶりに会おうということになってね。ついでに君らのピックアップ頼まれたのさ」

彼は慣れた様子で、言葉巧みにギャラリー達をあしらいながら、メリッサの荷物を車に積みこんだ。

黒のワゴン車は、運転席以外の窓にカーテンが掛かっていて、外からは中が見えないようになっている。予想通りだったが、賢一が助手席に乗り込んだ時には、あのライオンは既に跡形もなく消えていた。

今を時めくマジシャンが、すぐ隣にいると思うと賢一はどきどきした。

しかし、すぐに複雑な気持ちになった。広々とした車内で自由に動き回るローズを見ても、何も驚かないところみると、どうやら彼はあっち側の人間らしい。

エンジンをかけてからも、シャドーは窓を開けてファン達と別れを惜しみ、ようやく車が動いたのは賢一達が乗り込んでから五分以上経っていた。

最初の信号で車が停車すると、シャドーがメリッサが本来の姿に戻した。

「ありがとう。どうやって帰ろうかと思っていたところだったの。お久しぶりですおじさま」

どこから取り出したのか、ペットボトルの蓋をひねりながらメリッサが言った。

「ハハハ…そうだろうね。ジェフが迎えに行くつもりだったらしいけどネ。ところで、どうしたの？少し元気ないみたいだけど、ショーは上手くいったんだろう？それに、昔みたいにグランと呼んでくれよ」

シャドーは前を向いたまま快活に言った。

「ショーは大成功よ！それにワタシは元気よ、グラン」メリッサは明るく言ったが、すぐに黙り込んでしまった。

メリッサの様子が気になって、賢一は助手席から首を伸ばした。しかし、薄暗くて表情など良く分からない。しかたなく体勢を戻そうとした時、シャドーと目があった。

シャドーはにやっと笑って賢一に話し掛けた。

「自己紹介がまだだったネ。ボクは……もちろん知ってるよね？」

「あ──あっ！はい！通称『水の魔術師』ミスター・シャドーですよね。テレビでよく──」

「ホッホー！ブラボー！イエス！そのとうり！ボクはひと呼んで『水の魔術師』ミスター・シャドーだ。」

グランはハンドルから手を離し賢一の方に身を乗り出すと、人差し指を立ててウインクした。

「ワーッ！！ミ、ミスター！前！」

「ワッハッハ！！すまん、すまん！それで？メリッサがこんなに大人しいのは、ひょっとしてキミのセイかい？ケンイチ君」

グランは前に視線を移すと、楽しそうに言った。

「エッ？」

「アハハ！ジョウダン、ジョウダンだよ！」グランは声を上げて笑った。

どうやら賢一のあまり好きになれないタイプのようだ。すべての動作が大げさで、自意識過剰。そもそも何故、自分はここにいるのか。ギャラリー達から遠ざかる為に、取りあえず車に乗り込んだのだが。

「グラン！グラン！紹介するわ。」ローズが後ろから身を乗り出して言った。

「彼は、クスノキ　ケンイチクン。ショーのお手伝いしてくれるの！それで── えーと……グラン、特別保身処置については、その……」

「あぁ、大丈夫！ジェフからきいてるよ。分かってる、分かってる。」

グランはバックミラー越しにメリッサの方をチラリと見て、ハンドルをトントンとリズミカルに打った。

ローズは顔をグランに近づけて、小さな声で言った。

「あのね、メリッサが元気ないのはケンイチのせいじゃなくてたぶん──」

グランは分かってると云うように片手を上げてローズを黙らせると「ケンイチ君」と今までとは違い低い声で話しかけた。

「見破られた魔法使いは、ふつう、どうすると思う？」

賢一のすぐ側で、ローズがハッと息を吸い込むのがわかった。グランは心配するなというように２、３度ローズに頷き掛けると、今度は明るい調子で話し出した。

「ほら！子供向けの物語りか何かでよく描かれてるじゃない！正体のバレた魔法使いがさ──なに、そんなに怖がる必要はない。痛みなどない！むしろ、ちょっとばかりイイ気分かもしれないな。キオクを、記憶をちょうどいいように繋ぎ合わせるだけさ」

一瞬、身体の中を冷たい風が通り抜けた気がした。

賢一は探るようなグランの視線を感じながら、ただ、前方を走っている車を見つめた。身体は硬直し、握り締めた両手は冷たいのにじんわりと汗をかいていた。

───僕だって不思議に思ったさ、どうしてジェフリーは正体を知ってしまった自分をそのままにしたのか……

「は、は、は、大丈夫だよ！」

賢一が黙ったままでいると、グランは大きな声で笑いながら言った。

「心配するなよ！何もしない！まぁ……何か考えがあるんだろう…プロフェッサ・クレイトンのことだ。ところで、本当に今まで遭ったことないの？我が一族に？」

───あるわけないだろう！

ウィンカーが点滅し、車が隣の車線に移動したので、グランはようやく前を向いた。 車がまるで生き物みたいに勝手に動いている事に、賢一は気付いていた。 ハンドルは自動操縦のように勝手に動いているし、グランの足はブレーキやアクセルの上になく、気持ち良さげに伸ばされている。

───魔法使いに以前にも遭ったことあるかだって？そんな事あるわけないだろう！記憶を消されてしまった……？という可能性は……あるけど…さ……？

その可能性に思い当たって、再びゾクッと寒気が走った。

何もないところから自由に何でも取り出せたり、人の記憶さえ自由に変えられる魔法使い。

ジェフリーは、通常なら取るらしい対処法を何故取らないのか。賢一を信用？いや、理由が見つからない。

彼がどう考えてるのか分からないので、余計に薄気味悪かった。

手を握り締め黙り込む賢一を見て、何故かグランは満足したようにクスリと笑った。

「ところで、キミはワタシのマジックショーを観たことあるかい？」

「エッ？あ…は、はいっ！も…ごフッ！ゴホッ！ゴホッ！」

今にも魔法をかけられるのではないかと、賢一は唾を飲むのと喋り出すのが同時になりむせてしまった。

「もち…ゴホッ！もちろん！」賢一は出来るだけ明るく答えた。

「大丈夫かい？」

賢一は再びゴホゴホしながら大きく頷いた。

「で？どうだい？ワタシのマジックショーは」とグラン。

「た、楽しいショーですよね。ゴホッ……トークも面白いし」

「黙って淡々とマジックするのは性に合わないんだ『魔法使いシャドーの世界にようこそ！』『ではまた、魔法の世界でお会いしましょう！』オープニングとエンディングの決めセリフ、なかなかいいだろう？」

グランはクスクス笑いながら言った。

「この類い稀なユーモアのセンス！ＨＡ！ＨＡ！ＨＡ！」

何がそんなにお可笑しいのか、グランは外国人らしく大きな声で笑った。

「み、水を使ったマジックが僕は一番好きです。水が本当に生き物みたいで、まるで魔…」 グランがいたずらっぽくチッチッチと舌を鳴らした。

賢一は慌てて口をつぐんだ。

再び大声で笑うグランとは対照的に、メリッサはずっとおとなしくしていた。

まるでここに居ないみたいに、静かに窓の外を眺めている。 ローズが名前を三回も呼んで、やっとメリッサは我に返ったようだった。

「な、何？」

「大丈夫？」ローズが心配そうに尋ねた。

「平気、平気」メリッサは笑って答えた

「少し疲れただけ。わかってるわ。今夜の食事の事でしょ？」

「まあ、それもあるけど…」

「今夜はグランもいるから、シェパーズパイをたっぷり作らないとね。それとレンズ豆のスープていうのはどう？」メリッサはグーンッと伸びをしながら元気に言った。

「あぁ！それは楽しみだなぁ。彼女のパイは絶品だよ！ケンイチ君」

グランは嬉しそうに言ったが、賢一は勘弁して欲しかった。この気狂いじみた状況から速く脱して、正気に戻りたかった。今なら、ヘンな夢を見たということにしてしまえそうだし。

何としても断ろうと賢一が口を開きかけた時「ダメよ！」とメリッサが突然言った。

「ケンイチには家族があるでしょ！夕食は家族でいただくものよ！」

もちろん賢一だって帰りたい、ただ同じ年頃のしかも女の子に言われたのがしゃくにさわる。

「なんだよ急に！なに勝手に決めつけてんだよ！今どき家族揃って食事する家の方が珍しいんだよ。姉貴は結婚して別の家庭があるし、父さんなんて帰って来ない日も──」

「ダメ！とにかく帰りなさい！」メリッサはまるで小さな子を叱るように言った。

「…んだよっ！命令すんなよ。知りもしないくせに。オヤジはきっと食べて来るに決まってるし、母さんだって──」

「待ってるワ」

「お母様……ケンイチが帰って来るの待ってる」メリッサはしつこく言った。

「だから！会った事ないだろう？なに知ったような──」

賢一は運転席との間から顔を突き出したが、メリッサの顔が半分泣きそうになっている事に気付いて後の言葉を飲み込んだ。

慌てて顔を引っ込めると、フロントガラスから外を見つめた。

──何だよ……？

セピア色に染まる空に、様々な高さの建物が影絵のようにシルエット浮かべ始めている。賢一は眉間にしわを寄せて、その絵はがきみたいな光景をじっと眺めた。

メリッサと賢一が黙り込んでしまったので、車の中がしーんと静まり返ってしまった。

「とにかく、まぁ今日は帰った方がよさそうダ。あっそうだ！」

気まずい空気を払拭するように、グランが朗らかに言った。

「ケンイチクン。キミ宛の小包をジェフから預かっているんだった。キミが帰るなら渡してくれって」

グランはハンドルから完全に手を離して、上着のポケットから小さな箱を取り出した。 受け取って開けてみると、ミニチュアのバイクがちょこんと収まっていた。ちゃんとプレゼント用のクッションも中に敷いてある。

「……なんなんですか？何で僕に？そんな趣味ないんですけど…えーと…飾り？？？」

戸惑っていると、グランは意味ありげな笑みを浮かべ、蓋の裏に貼り付けてあるメッセージカードを指さした。蓋をひっくり返してみると、確かに小さなカードが貼り付けてある。

──クッソー！英語だ！！

「エーッと『近所でケンイチの臭いがするバイクをチェスが見付けた。あそこはアパートの住人以外は駐車禁止なので、念のためミニチュア化しておきました』だとさ」

結局、グランが読んでくれた。

「ええっ？」

賢一は呆然としながら、手の平サイズのバイクを眺めた。たしかに、お気に入りのバイク『ホンダのズーマー』だった。

「大丈夫だよ。その先の駐車場で元に戻してあげるから」

グランは賢一の肩をポンと叩いた。そして、車に命令した。

「寄り道だ。一キロ先の駐車場へ！」

しばらくすると、車はあまり手入れされていない薄暗い駐車場に入っていった。片隅には自転車や壊れた家具など良く分からないガラクタが無造作に積まれ、ロープが張ってあった。側には辛うじて『キケン』の文字が読み取れる立て札がある。

車を盾にしてグランがバイクを復元している間、賢一は見張りを務めた。

とんでもない魔法をかけられている自分のバイクも心配だったが、ショーが終わってからずっと、メリッサの様子がおかしい事が気になっていた。

確かローズを抱かせてあげたあの親子、彼らと接してから妙に黙り込んでいる。ステージの時とは打って変わって、悲しいような暗い雰囲気が彼女から漂っていた。

スモークの貼られた後部座席の窓を眺めていると、突然バイクのエンジン音がすぐ近くで大きく鳴り響き、賢一は驚いて振り返った。 自分のバイクが元のサイズに戻っていた。

「ほーらモトドオリ！万事オーケイ！」

グランは拍手喝さいを浴びるがごとく大げさに両手を広げて頷いた。

賢一はバイクに近づくと恐る恐る指先で触ってみた。いつもの心地よい振動が伝わってくる。信じられない思いでシートを撫でていると、グランが賢一に近づいて小さい声で言った。

「さっきはすまなかったネ。メリッサを許してあげてくれ」

「エッ？」驚いて顔を上げると、グランは話し出した。

「前はあんなキツイ感じじゃなかったんだ、もともと勝気な子ではあるが…」

イヤな予感がしてきて賢一は逃げ出したくなった。

「メリッサは──５年ほど前に母親を不幸な事故で亡くしてね……母親は妻の親友だった。クレイトン家とは家族ぐるみの付き合いだったんだが、事故の１ヶ月くらい後かな急に交流が途絶えてしまったんだ。まぁ、彼らがフランスの方へ引っ越す時期と、ワタシの息子がアメリカに留学する時が重なったという事もあるが…それにワタシも忙しくなり始めた頃だったし…」

───ダーッ！やめてくれ！知りたくないよ！

他人の面倒に巻き込まれるのが嫌で、人と親密になるのを極力避けてきた。メリッサの事はたしかに気にはなるが、このへんでお開きにしたい。まして、彼女は普通の人間とは違う。さっきまでお婆さんに変身していた！

そう！受け入れがたいが魔女だ。

今更ながら、どうしてあんなにメリッサに会いたがったのか！もしかして、あのショー自体何らかの魔法が掛けられていたのか

─── しかし、絶対迷惑そうな顔をしていると思うのに、グランはお構いなしに話を続けた。

「アメリカにいる息子から聞いたんだがネ、彼がアメリカに発つ前日の朝、日課のジョギング中に３０羽以上のカラスに襲われたんだ。どうやらメリッサが奴らを差し向けたらしい。しかも奴ら『家族と離れてはダメ！』と彼女の声で口々に叫んでたらしい。母親が亡くなって寂しかったんだろうね、彼女もまだ小さかったから、独立しようとする息子が家族を捨ててしまうんじゃないかと思ったんだろう」

───だから？僕に家族を大切にしろってか？ ジェフリーが何といって僕をグランに紹介したのか知らないけど……なんなの？この展開……勘弁してくれよ！だいたい！会ってから１日だって終わってないのに、何この親密そうな話！

賢一は大きな溜め息をついた。

「ま、そんなムズカシイ顔するな」グランはそう言って、馴れ馴れしく賢一の肩を組んできた。

「メリッサはイイ子だよ。これからも仲良くしてやってくれ！」

───も？仲良く？僕が魔法使いと仲良しに？

肩を組まれ賢一は息苦しさを感じながら、バイクのグリップをギュッと握り締めた。

───同情を誘う話をして、もしかして油断させようとしてる？秘密を知ってしまった僕をやはりどうにかしようとしているのかも、まさか？このバイクに何か魔法を……

グランが離れると、一瞬、賢一は身構えたが、ちょうどその時、「どうしのォ？」と可愛らしい声が聞こえた。

ローズが車の窓から身を乗り出して賢一達を見ている。

「何かモンダイ？時間かかるわね！」辺りに誰も居ないのをいいことに、大声で叫んでいる。

「No problem!！ 今いくよ！」

グランは良く通る声で返事をし、車の方へと向かった。

まだＬＥＤに交換されていないのか、切れかけている電球が、ローズの顔をチカチカ照らす

───完全にホラー映画だ。 賢一は、夜とライトはダメだなと思った。

「あ、あのーそれじゃあ、僕失礼します。バ、バイクありがとうございました！」

グランの背に向い、エンジン音に負けないよう大声で言った。

「ああ、そうか、そうだった」　グランはドアに伸ばしかけた手を止め、振り返った。舞台役者のように両手を広げ、賢一の方へ大またで戻ってくる。

えっ！やっぱり！僕を？！慌ててバイクに跨ろうしたが、間に合ない！！

───えっ？

グランは賢一を抱きしめた。まぁ……最悪の事は起きなかったが、これも出来れば勘弁して欲しかった。

「ケンイチ！またね！」グランの肩越しに、小さな手をブンブン振っているローズの姿が見えた。

電話を掛けるからと彼らに先に行ってもらい１人になると、賢一は改めて自分のバイクを眺めた。

───おかしな所はない……

いつまでもこうしているワケにはいかない、覚悟を決めて、すっかり暗くなった空に息を一度だけ吐き、ヘルメットを被った（なんと！メットも小さくなっていた）

 

家に着くと、賢一は２階に駆け上がり自分の部屋に飛び込んだ。

なんちゅう１日ダ！賢一はベットにドカッと転がった。

激しい運動をしたわけでもないのに、体中が痛い！特に帰りは緊張したままバイクを走らせていたので、まるでギブスをはめていたみたいに背中と腕に強ばりがある。

眉の上を拳固でゴリゴリほぐした後、大きく息を吸い込みハァーと吐いた。

あの感動のマジックショーは、全部マジックではなかった。タネも仕掛けも、最初からなかったのだ。 メリッサ自身、偽りの姿だった。 自分の年齢とそうかわらない女の子

───本物の魔女だった。

どんなに打ち消そうとしても、ポケットの中の小さな箱が、現実であるということを賢一に訴えていた。

ミニチュアのバイクが入っていた箱……蓋の裏には、英語で書かれたメッセージカードがある。

「───現実なんだよなぁ…」賢一は呟いた。

目をつむるとメリッサの（女の子の方）顔が浮かんだ。

数十分前に見せた悲しそうな表情がチラつく。 ベットから跳ね起きると、賢一はテーブルの上のノートパソコンを開いた。

───あった！ メリッサではなく、ジェフリー・クレイトンで検索してみたのだ。

ジェフリー・クレイトン( 1986─) イギリスを拠点に若手人気マジシャンとして活躍。 炎を使ったマジックを得意とし、ダイナミックでファンタジックなショーが海外でも評判に。結婚後、そのスタイルを一返。これまでのダイナミックでシャープなイメージから、動物や植物を使ったユーモラスなショーへ…… Ｊ＆Ｕと改名し夫婦でショービジネスを展開していたが、２００６年１１月悲劇　　が起こった。

パートナーである妻が練習中に事故で死亡。事故の詳細は伏せられているが、その後、契約していた舞台を全てキャンセル、以降ショービジネスから姿を消す。

賢一はパソコンの画面をジッと見つめた。

魔法使い……床に転がったメッセージ入の箱が目にさえ入らなければ、やはり夢か何かと思ってしまう。 結局のところ、何か不思議な現象を見たり、聴いたりしたとしても、人は心の奥では否定したがっているのかもしれない。

非現実的なことは怖いから。

もしかしたら、本当はもっといろんな人が、現実とは思えない出来事に出食わしていて、無理やりその思いを排除しているだけかも。

賢一だって、箱を捨ててしまい、目の前に何もなければ、２、３日で忘れてしまうだろう、適当に自分を納得させる理由を付けて……

───明日、最終日だって言ってたよな……次はまた違う別の場所へ………

いったい何人くらい紛れ込んでいるんだろう……この世界に。

───まてよ、グランがお仲間ということは他のマジシャンにも同じような奴が……？まさか、マジシャンってみんな魔法使いってことないだろうな……

賢一は再びパソコンの画面に目を戻した。１９７１年生まれ

───母さんと同級生だ───確か母さんがイギリスに留学してたのって……

パソコンを閉じると、賢一は階段を駆け下りた。

「母さん、あのさ───」ダイニングルームに入るなり賢一は言った。

母親はスープを温めようと、ガスレンジに火を付けたところだった。テーブルを見ると２人分の食事にラップがかけられていた。

賢一が来るのを、ずっと待っていたらしい。 大好物のハンバーグだ。

彼女の作るハンバーグは少し変わってて、細かくしたレンコンやセロリが沢山入っている。食感が良くて美味しい。ただし、好物がハンバーグだと誰にも話してない。子供の味覚だと笑われるのがイヤだったからだ。

「……待たなくていいって言ったのに」

こんな時、母に対して少しイラっとくるのは何故なんだろう。

「だって、せっかく賢ちゃんの好きなハンバーグ作ったのよ。美味しそうに食べるの、見ながら食べたかったんだもの。さ、食べましょう」

母親の美和が、ニッコリ笑って言った。

まるで賢一が降りてくるタイミングを計っていたように、全ての料理が温かい。

「…言ったっけ…その…ハンバーグが好きって」

「言わないけど──好きでしょ？分かるわよ。自分の子供の好物くらい」

美和は自慢げにニコニコしながら言った。

「それと、お魚が苦手、骨を取るのが面倒なのよね」

「………」

「あっそうだ。母さんさぁ、学生の頃イギリスに留学してたって言ってたよね」 ニコニコしている母親を見ていると、何だか首の辺りがムズムズしてくる。賢一は、大きめにカットしたハンバーグを頬張りながら話題を変えた。

「そうよ。大学二年の時かなぁ、もうずい分昔の話になっちゃったわね。それがどうかしたの？」

───ということは、１９か２０歳だな……

「ジェフリー・クレイトンってマジシャン知ってる？」

「ジェフリー・クレイトン？知ってるわよ！イギリスでものすごく人気があったのよ！カッコ良かったし、ショーの迫力がすごかった。それにね、会ったこともあるのよ。というかお世話になったというか、何しろ賢ちゃんが無事に生まれたのも彼のおかげだし」

「エッ！？」 スライストマトをソースの中にボトッと落っことし、賢一は得意げな母親の顔を信じられない思いでみつめた。

皿の周りに飛び散ったソースを、美和はフキンで丁寧に拭き取りながら「学生の時じゃないわよ」と言った。

「お姉ちゃんが小学校に上がる前、パパの仕事の都合で１年とちょっとかな、イギリスに住んでたのよ。そう言えばイギリス生まれなのね、賢ちゃん。言ったことなかった？」

賢一は箸をもったまま大きく首を振った。

───聞いたことない！

美和は賢一とおしゃべり出来るのが嬉しくて、楽しそうに話し続ける。

「もう十年以上も前になるのねェ…。初めて間近で見たマジックショーなの！素晴らしかったわぁ彼のマジック！賢ちゃんが生まれたは、そのショーの２日後だったのよ！予定日よりも１ヶ月以上も早かったから、ものすごく不安だったわ！」

美和は箸をキチンと揃えて箸置きに乗せると、お茶を一口飲んだ。

「それで？何？世話になったって？」賢一は急かすように言った。

「あぁ、そうそう！生まれたのは２日後だったけど、生まれそうになったのは…つまり産気づいたのは、なんと！ショーが終わってすぐの客席だったのよ。立ち上がった途端に破水したらしくて、どうしようと思っているうちに、陣痛が始まっちゃって！側でパパがオロオロしてるのはわかるんだけど、とにかく痛くて。そのうち周りが状況に気付いて大騒ぎになって！」

美和はもう一度お茶をゴクリと飲んだ。

「海外で、しかも早産でしょ？怖いのと痛いので混乱しちゃって、会場での記憶はその後あんまりはっきりしてないんだけど…たぶん気を失ってしまったんだと思う。気が付いたら、病院のベットに寝てたの。

不思議なことに陣痛も治まってた。素敵な病院だったのよ森に囲まれてて…ママを介抱して病院まで運んでくれたのが、あのクレイトン夫妻なの！って……ほんとに言ってなかった？ふーん……へんねぇ……え？あぁ、そうそう！そのクレイトン夫妻ね！ ショーも素晴らしかったけど、彼らも素敵なカップルだったわ！

奥様は日本人ですごく綺麗な人だった。そのまま入院することになって、２日後にあなたが生まれたの。結局は早産になってしまったけど、賢ちゃん、とっても元気で。お医者様も何も心配ないって。

ご丁寧に、クレイトン夫妻も毎日お見舞いに来てくださったのよ。いろいろ面白いお話を聞かせて下さって…そうそう！お花をね、毎回持って来てくださるんだけど、マジックでポンッて出すのよ！お可笑しいでしょ？」

美和はクスクス笑いながら再び箸を取ったが、賢一はマジックでというのは怪しいと思った。

「でもねぇ…退院した直後は何だかヘンだったのよネェ…」箸を両手でもったまま、美和は額にシワを作り遠くを見つめた。

「ヘンって？」ドキドキしながら賢一は聞き返した。

「ウンとね…パパがね…パパが覚えてないって言うの。退院した次の日『素敵な病院だったわネ。クレイトン夫妻も気取らなくて親切な方達で』って話したら、何の話だ？って。マジックショーが終わって、すぐにタクシーに乗ったって。

早産で大変だったってところはおんなじなんだけど、行った病院は、予定してたセント・ヘレナ病院だって言うのヨ！もちろんクレイトン夫妻もショーの上でしか知らないって。ヘンでしょ？私ははっきり覚えているのに、パパはね早産のショックでママの頭が混乱してるんだって言うの！」

賢一の心臓は、ランニングしてきたかのように速く打った。

───まさかそんな事……

「でもね、パパの方が、ずっと混乱してるみたいだったのよ。ものすごく焦ったように心配するかと思えば、何十分もボーッとしていたり。突然、部屋の中をグルグル歩き回ったかと思うと、立ち止まって何かブツブツ言い出したりするの。

パパがおかしくなったんじゃないかって、ママ怖くなっちゃって。だって、そんなことが２日間も続いたのよ！」

「そ…それでどうなったの？」

「それで、どうしたらいいのか分からなくて困ってたら、思い出したの！退院する時、ドクターの連絡先を教えていただいこと！」

「したの？電話！」

「そりゃあしたわよ。すぐにネ。困った事があったら、いつでも連絡下さいって仰ってたもの。でね、パパみたいな症状はよくある事なんですって、海外で難しい出産に立ち会うと、奥さんより旦那様のほうがショックが大きんだって。

症状は２、３日で収まるから大丈夫って。そのとおりだったわ。言われたとおりブランデーを少しばかり飲ませて休ませただけで。記憶の方は、相変わらずママの思い違いだって言い張ってたけど、ウロウロしたり、ブツブツ言ったりするのはなくなったの」

賢一は、残りのハンバーグを意味も無く切り分け、ソースでビシャビシャにしていた。

───魔法だ…魔法をかけられたんだ、父さんは…でも何で母さんは普通に記憶があるんだろう？運ばれた病院もきっと普通じゃあない！まぁ母さんは、自分が大変な状況だから、余計なことを考えるヒマなんかなかっただろう。だけど、父さんは──もしかして何かに気づいた……とか？……だから記憶を──

「───ちゃん、賢ちゃんどうしたの？」

ハッと我に返ると、美和が胸のところで両手を重ね心配そうに賢一を見つめていた。

「エッ？あ、ああ、なんでもない」 この不思議な繋がりはなんだ。一瞬、風邪の引き始めのようにゾクッと悪寒が走ったが、賢一はなんでもないふうに急いで残りの夕食にとりかかった。

「……それで、話しは変わるんだけど、賢ちゃん…あの…その…」

美和は急にしどろもどろになり、声が１オクターブさがった。

「その…学校のことなんだけど……」

賢一は母親から目を逸らし、ハンバーグを飲み込むのと同時にコップをつかみ、水を一気に飲み干した。

「その…このままじゃぁ推薦難しい…かもって…、出席日数が足りないって…それで…どう…なの？」

そう！これが現実だ。

以前のように、学校の話しをするだけで喉が締め付けられる息苦しさは、不思議と今はない。魔法などという、ありえない世界を体験してしまったからか、重苦しい現実が体重を減らしたように軽く感じられた。

彼らは正体がバレないように、巧妙に世の中に紛れ込んで生きている。彼らの子供は、僕達と同じように学校に通ったりするのだろうか。

───僕の学校にも実は紛れ込んでたりして……まさか…

学校の話をしたばっかりに、息子がまたもとに戻ってしまったんじゃないかと、美和が不安そうな顔で見ている。

「……学校いく…推薦はどうでもいいけど、確かめたいことがあるんだ。学校には月曜から行くヨ」

賢一は目を逸らしたまま、言われたからじゃなく、いかにも何気ないふうに言って、立ち上がった。

───タメの中に、他の魔法使いがいたりして…

「だから母さん───」

母親に視線を戻すと次の言葉が出なくなった。彼女の目から、涙がハラハラと流れ出していた。

「えーと……じゃ…じゃあ、お…おやすみ」 焦りながら小さな声で言うと、賢一は２階の自分の部屋へと急いだ。

昔から彼女はよく泣く。感情の起伏が激しいという訳ではなく、なんにでもすぐ感情移入してしまうのだ。以前は、そんな母親の自分にはない素直さや従順さが、子供っぽく白々しく思えて腹が立っていた。 もっと腹立たしいのは、彼女のその性格を父親が上手く利用しているように思えてならないことだった。

───そう言えば、最近オヤジと話したのって……学校行かなくなって三日目　のあの夜だけか……

何を言われたのか一向に思い出せない。

ただ部屋を出てゆく前に、自分を見習えば人生の成功者になれる、というような事を力説していたように思う。

───成功者ねェ……頭ん中引っかき回されたかもしれないのに……

父親の自信満々の顔を思い浮かべ、賢一は苦笑した。

もし、父親がメリッサ達の存在を知ったら、その上もしかしたら……イヤ確実だ、自分に魔法がかけられてると知ったら、自意識過剰で自己中心的なアイツはどうなるだろう…

賢一が恐怖におののく父親の顔を想像して、１人でニヤニヤしていると、玄関の扉が開く音がした。

父親の賢太郎が仕事から帰って来たのだ。

ソーっと扉を開け耳を澄ましてみる。

「───ら言っただろう。大丈夫だって。賢一はなんたって僕の子だ。何が大事か良く分かってる」 父親の嬉しそうな声が聞こえる。母の声は小さくて聞き取れないが、きっとニッコリ笑って、そうですね、と答えていることだろう。

よく言うよ。オマエが甘やかすからだと、母さんをせめてたくせに。

賢一は乱暴に閉めてしまいたい気持ちをぐっと抑え、気付かれないように出来るだけ静かに扉を閉めた。

イライラしてベッドに大の字になった。

しかし、疲れていたせいか、いつの間にか賢一はベッドと一体化していった。

 

気が付くと、賢一は１人森の中にいた。

洋画に出てくるような、深い森のようだった。静かだ。薄暗いので夕方か夜なのかと思ったが、生い茂った木々の隙間から見える明るい空が、まだ陽が高いことを示していた。

冷たいマイナスイオンが迫るようにまとわりつく、普段なら心地よいと思うのだろうが、今は自分がたった１人きりだという孤独感と恐怖心を倍増させる役割にしかなっていなかった。

息をひそめて辺りを見回し、空を見上げること数回。たまに聞こえる小鳥のさえずり以外まるで音がなく、森じたいが息を殺して自分を見つめているように感じる。

呼吸がどんどん荒くなって、身体全体が心臓のようだ。怖くてすぐにでもここから逃げ出したい、なのに足から根が生えてしまったかのように動けない。

このままでは森に吸い込まれ、自分はこの深い森の一部になってしまう。

賢一が、恐怖のためか感覚のなくなった両手を握り締めた時、２メートルほど離れた草むらがガサッと音を立てた。

ドキッとして目をやると、白いウサギがヒョイと顔を出し、後ろ足で立ち上がって賢一を見つめていた。

息を止めて、しばらくの間見つめ合う、すると、親ウサギだったのか、すぐ側で子ウサギが１羽２羽と順々に顔をのぞかせた。

３羽揃って鼻をピクピクさせている可愛らしい姿にいくらか気持ちが落ち着くと、賢一は、自分の立っている所が細い道になっている事に気付いた。右側の先が少しばかり開けているように思える。生い茂る左右の草木も若干低いようだ。

恐る恐るゆっくりと右手の方へ移動してみる。足元の石ころや、雑草に足を取られることなく、まるでベルトコンベアーで運ばれているように身体が進む。

時々先程のように草木が音を立てることがあり、その度にビクッとなったが、いずれも、ウサギなどの小さな動物の仕業だった。

どれほど進んだのかわからない、急に目の前に大木が現れた。

樹齢何年か分からないような大きな木。その木を突き当たりにして道は左右に別れている。 右か、左か、賢一は目を凝らして左右に伸びる道の向こうを見る。

左手の遠い空に細い煙が上がっている。焚き火か、煙突の煙のように細長い煙が風に乗って流れていた。

人がいる！助かった！賢一は左手の方に歩を進めた。

ずい分離れていると思ったが、あっという間に目的地が見えてきた。

古そうな大きな洋館だ。

不思議な事に、見えるところまでは飛ぶように来れたのに、建物の門にはなかなかたどり着けなかった。何故か歩調がゆっくりにしかならないのだ。

２本ある煙突の左側、小さい方の煙突から煙が出ている。

───前見た時とちっとも変わってない……え？

「…前？ここ初めて来んだよな…？」

賢一は思わず声に出して呟いた。

その時になって、自分は声が出せるのだと気付いた。周りがあまりにも静かなので、音のない世界に迷い込んだのかと勝手に思っていたのだ。

その館は、ホラー映画で見るような恐ろしい雰囲気は全くない。むしろさっき感じたように懐かしい感じがする。

「なんだかなぁ？音のない世界って。バカじゃね？ちっちゃな動物の物音でビビってたくせに…」賢一はやっとたどり着いた門扉に手をかけて、苦笑いした。

「しっかし、疲れた……呼び鈴は？とにかく座りたい」

そう思った途端、辺りがボヤけ、気が付くと賢一は洋館の中に居た。 暖炉を囲む居心地よさそうなソファの一つに、いつの間にか腰掛けている。

誰もいないのか、ここも静かだった。

ただ大きな柱時計の時を刻む音だけが、広い部屋に異様に響きわたっている。

暖炉からパチパチと木の爆ぜる音が心地よく、フカフカのクッションが眠気を誘う、賢一は立ち上がって伸びをすると、部屋の中をゆっくりと歩きだした。

ソファとお揃いのチェック柄のカーテン、ところどころに置かれたコーヒーテーブルには、紺色のテーブルクロスに生成りのレースが重ねて掛けられてる。ボウウィンドーの側には、小ぶりのテーブルとイスのセットが配置され、バラが美しく生けられていた。

再び暖炉の所に戻って来て、マントルピースに飾られた沢山のフォトスタンド見つめた。

写真を一つ一つ手にとってみる。全く知らない人たちだ。

外国人ばかりの写真の中に、明らかに東洋人しかも日本人と思われる家族写真が三枚あった。 その１枚を手に取った時、トントンと扉をノックする音がした。

一番離れた所にある扉がゆっくりと開く、賢一は慌ててフォトスタンドを元の所へ戻した。

「あっとスミマセン…僕はその…」

賢一がドギマギしながら振り向くと、おばあさんの姿のメリッサが立っていた。

驚いていると、どこからともなく人の話し声が聞こえてきた。

「──気付いたか？…」 「た…ん…だから…よせと…たのに…」 「───」 「Ｎｏ……」 「…Ｉ　ｔｈｉｎｋ…」

どこからと言うより、何となく部屋全体から聞こえてくるような感じがする。それにあちこちから見られているいるような……

「えっとォ…他に誰か…」 賢一が恐る恐る問い掛けようとすると、不意にメリッサが近づいて来た。

しかし、近づいて来たと思ったのは間違いだった。

近寄ったから彼女の姿が大きく見えたのではなく、メリッサがその場で巨大化していっているのだった。

ドンドン大きくなり、遂には壁一面にまで大きくなった。

吹き出した汗が、体中にダラダラと流れ出す、身体は硬直しているのに心臓だけが走り回っていた。

いきなり、メリッサの顔だけが賢一の方にスーッと飛んできた。

「なっ！う─うわーっ！」

地の果てまで届きそうな声で叫んだ。

逃げ出そうとして足が縺れ、賢一は転んでしまった。 すると、どういう訳か賢一は階段の踊り場に居た。

驚く間もなく、そこへカラスの羽を付けたメリッサの巨大な顔が迫ってきた。

死にもの狂いで階段を駆け降りるが、思ったようにスピードが出ない。 次の踊り場で一瞬だけ振り返り、さらに降りようとしたが、何故かそこには踏み板がなかった。

「ひっ…！」

賢一はポッカリあいた暗い穴に落ちていった……

突然、鼻に強烈な痛みが走って、賢一は両手で鼻を抑えた。

涙が出てきた目を無理やり開けると、そこは見慣れた自分の部屋だった。

「…つ…痛ってェ…」

どうやらベッドから転げ落ちたらしい。 こんな季節なのにぐっしょり汗をかいている。

「───ゆ…夢…か？」 賢一は天井を見上げてフーッと息を吐き出した。

心臓がまだバクバクしている。トレーナーの首元をパタパタさせ、目を瞑り今度は息を思いっきり吸い込んでから吐き出した。

考えてみるとこの間から何度深呼吸したことか。

外はまだ暗い、時計を見ると夜中の３時だった。

「…たくっ、なんて夢だ…」

テーブルの上の小さな箱が視界に入って、賢一は忌々しそうに呟いた。その途端大きなくしゃみが出た。

目が冴えてしまった賢一は、汗のせいで急速に冷え出した身体を温めるために、バスルームへとそっと階段を降りていった。

温かいシャワーを浴びながら、賢一は夢で見た光景を思い出していた。怖かったのだが、あの建物はやはり妙に懐かしい気がする。外観だけでなく室内にも覚えがあるという事は、中に入ったのか……写真などで見たのではなく、自分が確かにそこに居た微かな記憶があるのだ。 なのにそれがどこなのか、一向に思い出せない。

イライラしながらシャンプーを泡立て、頭を洗っていると、どこかでカラスの鳴き声がした。

ドキッとして一瞬手を止める。 シャンプーが目にしみて痛いのに、無理やり目を開けて耳を澄ます。

空耳か……風があるのか庭木が揺れているのが、磨りガラスを通して分かる。

賢一は髪を急いで洗い流し、身体は適当に洗うとそそくさとバスルームを出た。そしてあっという間に着替えると、自分の部屋に急いで戻った。

夢で見た、カラスの羽を持ったメリッサの大きな顔が頭をよぎる。

───怖がってるわけじゃない！アイツだ！グランがあんな余計なこと言うか　ら……

メリッサの秘密を知った時だって平気だったのにと、毛布を頭からかぶって心の中で悪態をついく。 暑苦しくなっては毛布から顔を出し、またもぐり込むを繰り返しているうちに、夜が明けた。

賢一は、ボーッとしたままジーンズとシャツに着替えた。

結局、あれから全く眠れずに朝を迎え、クマのできた顔を鏡に映して溜め息を付く。大きく伸びをすると、背中がバキッと鳴った。

ベッドを背もたれにしてノートパソコンを手元に引き寄せる時、例の箱、ミニチュア化されたバイクが収められていた箱が、コトリと絨毯に落ちた。

悪夢の原因メ！と、握り潰そうとして、ただの箱にしてはやけに重い事に気が付いた。 昨日より重たくなったように感じる。

振ってみると、カタカタと音がした。バイクに気を取られて気付かなかったが、まだ中に何か入っているのか。 マッチ箱のように中箱を引き出すと、中敷があった。それは木でできていた。

───？

取り出して引っくり返してみると、手の平サイズの鏡だった。

当然のように覗いてみる、何も映らない。 鏡じゃないのか？

不思議に思っていると、突然表面がユラリと揺れた。

「ワッ！」と放り出すと、ユラユラする水面のようなところから一筋の光がパァッと指した。

その光はクルクルと螺旋を描き、やがて人の形を取り始めた。

「やぁ、ケンイチクン！」

足元は若干ボヤけているが、ほぼ完璧な姿で、ジェフリー・クレイトンが目の前に立っていた。

ディスカウントショップで手にいれた\1,900のGジャン、フリマで\1,000だったワンピ。\790の白いビッグTには、レースを縫い付けた。\1,500のピンクのTシャツに\1,500の花柄パンツアクセサリーは娘の手作り(^^)v

愛する娘へ

お早う！

今日はとても顔色がいいですね。ホッとしました。いつも苦労している前髪も今日はバッチリです！あなたは親ばかだと苦笑いするけれど、可愛すぎてヘンな虫がつかないかと今からとっても心配！

昨夜は良く眠れたと聞いて、ママは心底うれしくて,ちょっとウルッてきました。それに、薬も飲まずに眠れたのでしょう？あなたも嬉しそうで、よかったね。

先月は本当に大変だったね。だけど、これがスタート地点だよ、これからもまだまだいろいろあると思う。でも今この試練を乗り越えたら絶対成長するよ！もっと後になって「ああ！こんなことあったな！なんであんなことで悩んだんだろう」って思う日が来る。とは言わない！だって現在苦しいんだモノね。いつか笑えるなんて普通なかなか思えないものよ。あなたやママみたいにネガティブな人はね！

お正月が明けて、学校が始まって三日後だった？体調が崩れたの。

朝、起こしに行く度に「昨夜は一睡も出来なかった」とげっそりとした顔で言われ、遅刻して行くことが増えた。そんな状態がどんどん続いて、学校も休みがちになって、一月の末近くには十日も休んじゃった。顔色も悪く、食欲も無くなってどんどん痩せてゆくのがわかった。「わー！ママスカートがゆるゆるになった！」あなたは笑いながら言ったけど、そりゃママも 「そんなんで、痩せてもダメじゃん！痩せたんじゃなくやつれたんだよ！」と笑って返したけど、内心は「どうしよう！この子死んじゃう！」って気が気じゃな かったんだよ！

最初は、お正月の昼夜の逆転生活が原因だと思ってた。

白状するけど「この子は甘えているだけじゃないか？ほんとはもっとがんばれるけど、怠けているんじゃないか？」と思ってしまうことも正直あったんだ。ごめんね！

睡眠障害！！ストレスが原因とわかって、いろいろ試したね。

むりやり起こして、朝日を浴びて適度な運動。ママが調べた治療法です！一緒に朝ラジオ体操やったね。第二体操なんか二十五年ぶりだよ！漢方薬にマッサージ！あなたは昼に眠らないようがんばっていた。

でも、始めのうちは、薬を飲んでも夜眠れなくて辛そうだった。本当は寝かせてやりたい！休ませてあげたい！でも、今寝かせてはだめだ！毎日、何度も葛藤していたよ……

一番効果があったのは、あなたの相棒（双子の片割れ）とママと三人で腹を割って話し合ったことかな。

彼女は「ちょっとキツイかもしれないけど──」と思っていることを正直に、でも愛情もってあなたに話してくれたね。

クラスのお友達たちに誤解されつつあるということを。

「体調が悪くて言葉数が少ないので、機嫌が悪いと誤解されている。」

「ただ眠いだけで学校休んだり、マラソンなど辛い体育はすぐ休むのは甘えてるの？」

とかね……

「どんなに、しんどくて、辛くても明るくしないといけないの？」搾り出すような声であなたは泣きながらイスに座り込んだ。でも、後ろ向きで泣いていたから気付かなかったかもしれないけど、相棒も心苦しそうに目を瞑って話していたんだよ。ママもほとんど泣きそうだった！

そうだよね。友達なら分かってほしいよね。

風が冷たくひどい時は、走るとジンマシンが出ることや、睡眠障害の辛さは本当に本人しかわからないんだよ。

あなたが仲良くしていた〇〇ちゃんと〇〇ちゃんが、実はあなたをちょっと好きではないらしいと聞いて声を上げて泣いたね。あなたの言葉の少なさ、分かってくれるだろうという甘えが原因。もちろん、彼女たちの偏った見方もあるよ。でも……

「漫画や、テレビドラマみたいに人は人を容易く理解出来ないんだよ。言葉にしなきゃ！しんどい時はしんどいと言えばいい！今眠いだけだから気にしないでとか、とにかく口に出さなきゃ！わかってオーラを出しているだけじゃダメ！辛いときは助けを求めればいいの！もちろん、自分も努力することを忘れてはだめ！ジンマシンを引き起こさないためにも、甘いものをもう少し減らすことや、早く休む為に勉強は前倒しで済ませることとか、それに、その努力をお友達に話しなさい！ぜったい助けてくれるから！ちゃんと相手と向き合って受け入れてくれる友達が本当の友達だよ。それでも去ってゆく友達は離れてしまえばいいの」

そんなふうに話しながら、実はママね「わたしの娘を嫌うなんて、こっちから願い下げよ！あぁ、魔法が使えたらクラスメイトに変身して、友達だったらもっと理解しろ！一言いってやりたい！いや！とっちめてやりたい！」なんて思ってた。ほんと、親ばかだね！我が子を前にすると、本当に正しいことと感情との戦いだよ！

相棒も言ってたでしょ。

「正直になりなよ！みんな助けてくれるよ！優等生じゃなくったていいじゃん！もっと孤立してる子いるよ。まだ、今だったら大丈夫、誤解なんかすぐ解ける」

とにかく、ママはいつでもあなたの味方だよ！どんなにあなたがわがまま言ってもふて腐れていても、そんなことで嫌いになったりしない。こうだから好き！とか限定付きじゃない！あなたそのものが大好きだから！

バイクに跨ったまま、賢一は昨日の事を思い出していた。オープンカフェの角で、いつでもすぐ出られるようにメットをかぶって彼女が出てくるのを待った。ここなら駐車場から表通りに出るために必ず通る。
目の錯覚が2度だなんて、やっぱりおかしいじゃあないか。マジックの練習というのもヘンだし。とにかく後をつけてみる！
「さむっっ…」今日はやけに冷える。賢一はブルっと身体を震わせた。早く出てきてくれ…予定よりも時間が掛かっている気がした。
一度バイクを降りて、寒さのために強ばった身体を伸ばそうかと思ったとき、ようやくメリッサの車が通りへ出てきた。賢一は少し離れて後を付け始めた。
彼女は運転しない方がいい、はっきり言ってものすごく下手だ。時々玉突き事故を起こしそうになったが、際どいところで大丈夫なのがかえって恐ろしい。前後にいる車の運転手は、きっともっとヒヤヒヤしていることだろう。
車は、郊外の何棟かあるこじんまりしたコーポの一つにたどり着いた。
ここが、住まいか…賢一はドキドキした。メリッサはコーポの前にある小さな駐車スペースに車を止めて降りると、賢一に背を向ける形で車のフロントの方に移動した。かなり右寄りの斜めに止められた自分の車を見て、彼女は外国人らしく大げさに肩を竦めた。それからゼンマイ仕掛けの人形を下ろし大事そうに抱えると、年齢にそぐわない軽やかさで階段を登って行った。
賢一は彼女から目を離さないようにしながら、向かい側にある同じようなコーポの脇の狭いスペースに、バイクを止めた。
扉が閉まる音がして、２階の向かって右側の一番端の窓に明かりが点った。
あらためて建物を見る、洋風の作りで偽物の煙突がある。一棟四世帯の造りになっている。
メリッサが中に入って５分と経ってないだろう、突然玄関の扉が開いて、中から賢一と同じくらいの女の子が出てきた。賢一は慌ててコーポ前の植え込みの陰に身を潜めた。
そ―っと顔を覗かせると、手袋をはめながら階段を降りてくる姿が見えた。長くて明るい栗色の髪を、キュッとポニーテールにしている。見るからに外国人で、しかも遠目でもかなりカワイイ。
メリッサの孫……か？賢一は心臓の鼓動が更に早くなった気がした。
ジーンズにニットのポンチョを羽織り、赤のブーツが良く似合っている。何かのCMに出てきそうだ。
彼女は急ぎ足で駐車スペースすぐ横にある自転車置き場に向い、不似合いなボロい（鍵を掛けずともぜったい盗まれそうにない！）黒の（よく見ると青い花柄）のママチャリを運び出した。コーポの前を通る時、２階の（たぶんメリッサの家）フラワーボックスから、何か白い物が美少女の肩にフワッと落ちてきた。
タオルかと思ったが、よく見ると白い小さなサルだった。
彼女は別段驚くでもなくサルに何か話し掛けている。わーっサルだ！ペットなのかな？ロケーションが森かなんかだったら、まさにCMだ！カワイイ！見とれているうちにサルは彼女のトートバックに潜り込んだ。彼女は諦めたように溜め息を付くと、自転車のカゴにバックを載せて出掛けてしまった。
少女の姿が見えなくなっても、賢一は彼女の姿を追うようにしばらくの間遠くを見つめていた。突然、ガーッとカラスの鳴き声が頭の上の方からした。ハッと我に返り、すぐ側の大きな樹を見上げる。何にもない？──真上で鳴いたように思ったのに。空耳かと賢一が立ち上がって大きく深呼吸をした時、メリッサの家の角、自転車置き場の横にある似たような大きな樹の上にカラスが数羽いるのに気づいた。
さぁ！落ち着けよ賢一！今でしょ！メリッサは家にいる。日本語で大丈夫なことは確認済みだし、さっきのあの子がいない今が絶対いい！
階段を一段一段登る度に、太鼓をたたくように賢一の心臓が鳴った。──もうすぐ会える。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　興奮のためか、この間見た不可解な出来事などすっかり忘れてしまった。
インターホンが目の前にある、ボタンを押そうとして、指が震えているのに気付いた。
──ここまで来たんじゃないか！
賢一は思い切ってボタンを押した。
反応がない。
気を取り直して、もう一度ボタンを押してみる。だがやはり反応がなかった。
──おかしいな……出ていった様子ないのに……
もしかしてもう休んでいるのか？
三度目は失礼かもと、賢一が躊躇っていると中からカギを回す音が聞こえた。ゆっくりと扉が開く。心臓が止まりそうだ。
しかし、顔を覗かせたのは、一見してあの美少女の父親だと分かる外国人の男性だった。顔色が悪く、パジャマの上にその瞳と同じブルーのカーディガンを羽織っている。
「エッ？えっと、あ…あの…ボク…その…」
想定外の出来事に賢一の頭の中は真っ白になった。てっきりメリッサ本人が出てくるものと思い込んでいたのだ。
「何か御用ですか？」
その男性はニッコリ微笑んで、キレイな日本語で尋ねた。
「ア…アイウォントゥミートメ…メリッサ」
せっかく日本語で尋ねてくれたのに、賢一はパニクって英語で答えてしまった。しかも超ヘタクソな。英語を習い始めた小学生でもこんなに下手ではないだろう。
火が噴出したかのように顔が熱くなるのを感じる。
男性は、ちょっと驚いた顔をして賢一を見つめ、まるで小さな子供に話しかけるようにゆっくりと言った。
「彼女は出掛けています。お友達ですか？中に入って待ってて、すぐ帰って来ると思いますよ」
「エッ？いいえ！ノーノー！ま、また来ますから！」
賢一は恥ずかしさで最後の方は早口になり、相手の顔も見ないで頭をペコっと下げ、その場から一目散に逃げ出した。
背後で男性が何か言ったように思ったが、気づいたときにはもう、賢一は転げ落ちそうな勢いで階段を駆け下りていた。階段を下りた勢いのまま通りに出ると、さっきの美少女が去った方向へとさらに走った。
途中、自転車で向かってくる彼女の姿がチラリと目に入ったが、顔を見られないように頭を下げて走り続ける。すれ違うときにはもっと頭を下げたので転びそうになったが、なんとか体勢を立て直して走った。
息が切れ、心臓が喉から飛び出そうだ。くっそう！ヘンな奴だと思ったろうな彼女！体力不足だ！そういやぁしばらく運動してないし！よ、よしっ！も、もういいんじゃない、し、心臓が止まる……？そう思った途端、再び足が縺れ、賢一はやっと走るのを止めた。
目を瞑り、賢一はこの場でぶっ倒れたい思いと闘いながら膝に手を置きハアハアと肩で息をした。水分のまったくなくなった口の中で舌が悲鳴を上げ、身体の全ての細胞が酸素を要求した。
──あの人！あの子のお父さんだよな……でメ リッサの息子……？友達って？出掛けてるってどういう事？……居留守……だよな……やっぱり…あ…でも中で待てって？？？何だそりゃあ…？

賢一がやっと普通に息が出来るようになった頃、あの美少女は自転車置き場で独りブツブツ呟いていた。独り言にしてはずい分長い。
カラスのいる樹を見上げたり、モゾモゾと動く自分の胸元に向かって何か呟いたりを繰り返している。身動き一つしないカラスはまるで置物のように見えた。

賢一は再び顔が熱くなり、心臓がドクドクと波打ち始めたのを感じた。呼吸が楽に出来る様になると、先程の失態をどうしても思い出してしまう。恥ずかしい！！
──あぁ！絶対、絶対ヘンな奴だと思われたよ。本当にもう！なんだよ…何だあの英語……あぁもう何やってんだボクは…！
思い出せば出すほど恥ずかしくなって、また走り出し、賢一は近くにあった地下鉄の入口に飛び込んでしまった。
階段を駆け降り、切符売り場が目に入って初めてここが地下鉄の駅だと分かった。よかった、ここからなら新宿も近い。ホッとすると同時にバイクを置き去りにして来てしまった事を思い出した。仕方ない…今更戻れない……
賢一は情けなさそうに溜め息を付くと、きっぷを購入した。電車は満員で、効きすぎる暖房と働き疲れたサラリーマンの加齢臭でムッとしていた。
だがイヤな臭いが却って頭をはっきりさせてくれたようだ、突然訪ねたのはやはり失礼だったのだと賢一は思い立った。だから彼女は居留守を使ったに違いない。
『友達』とはどういう意味なのか分からないけど、とにかくもう一度会いに行こう、会ってもらえるかどうか分からないけど。せっかく家まで突き止める事が出来たのだ。どうしても諦めきれないこの思いは、いったいどこからくるのだろう。賢一は不思議に思った。

ショーの前に捕まえようと、次の日は、電車に乗って直接彼女の家の方に向かった。昨夜は恥ずかしさばかりがこみ上げて来て、ほとんど眠れなかった。それにあのカワイイ女の子が自分の事を何と聞いたのかがすごく気になった。
──たぶん僕のことをあの子の友達だと勘違いしてる。あの子、とうぜん知らない奴だって言っただろうな僕のこと。このままじゃぁ、カンペキにストーカーじゃん！あーあ！なんで言わなかったんだ？メリッサのファンですって！
あれこれ悩んでいるうちに、賢一はいつの間にか彼女の住むコーポに着いてしまった。
自分のバイクが昨日と同じ場所にあるのが分かり、少しばかりホッとする。
とにかく昨日の失礼だけでも詫びようと気合を入れた時、カラスの鳴き声が頭上から聞こえた。
コーポに影をつくる大きな樹の幹に、カラスが数羽とまっている。驚いて見上げると一番大きなカラスと目があった。すると、カラスは賢一を見つめたままカァと一声鳴いた。なんだか、馬鹿と言われたような気がする。
不意にそのカラスが翼を広げて飛び立ち、コーポのフラワーボックスにとまった。メリッサの住居だ。カラスはまるでノックするかのように嘴でコツコツと窓を打った。
ほどなくその窓が開くと、あの美少女の顔が現れた。
賢一がアッと思う間もなく、彼女はすぐに顔を引っ込め、数秒後には玄関らしき扉の開く音がした。
彼女は昨日の賢一と同じのように、ものすごい勢いで階段を駆け下りてきた。
近くで見ると本当にカワイイ。バラ色の頬に、チェリーを思わせる愛らしい唇が色白の肌に映え、青みがかったハシバミ色の大きな瞳が印象的だった。
目の前に迫る美少女に、賢一はドギマギした。すると、彼女はいきなり賢一に向かって怒鳴った。
「あなたいったい誰なの！」
彼女は警戒心を露わにして眉間にしわを寄せている。日本語上手なんだ、よかったァとしょうもないことを考えていると
「言いなさい！誰なの！友達だなんて…まさか奴らの…」と詰め寄ってきた。　警棒のつもりなのか、手にはショーで使った杖を握り締めている。
賢一がどうしていいか分からず少しだけ後ずさりした時、上の方から聞き覚えのある落ち着いた声がした。
「そんなところで大きな声出さないで、上がってもらいなさい」
見上げると、さっきの窓から父親らしきあの男性が微笑んでいた。

不信感をアピールしながらも少女が通してくれたのは、居心地よさそうなリビングだった。あちこちに間接照明があり、センス良くまとめられている。
母親のお気に入りの洋書で紹介されているイギリスのＢ＆Ｂの一部屋を切り取ったかのようだ。
何故か、外から見たよりもずい分広く見える。奥にドアが二つ、美しいステンドグラスをはめ込んだドアが入ってすぐ右側にあった。
青い瞳の男性は、暖炉を背景に、柔らかそうなクッションをいくつか重ねた年代物のウイングバックチェアにゆったりと座っていた。
マントルピースの上部には、美しいウィリアム・モリスのタペストリーが掛かっている。
住人が外国人だからか、まるで海外のホテルにでも居るみたいだと賢一は思った。
賢一はモジモジしながら、勧められたパーソナルチェアに腰を下ろした。背もたれにあるふかふかのクッションは、緊張で浅くしか座れなかったため役に立たなかった。
少女は相変わらず怖い顔をして、腕を組んだまま入口に突っ立っている。
賢一が戸惑っていると「すまないネ。パジャマ姿で失礼するよ」と紳士は微笑んだ。
「さて、キミの名前はまだ聞いていなかったネ、わたしはジェフリー、ジェフリー・クレイトンだ。あそこで怖い顔してる子はワタシの娘だ」
ジェフリーと名乗った青い瞳の男性は、快活に自己紹介した。
「エッと、ぼ、僕は…その…」
「もう！早く言いなさい！何者なの！誰の命令で─」「まあまあ」と相変わらず鼻息の荒い少女に向かって父親が優しく言った。
「少し落ち着きなさい。そんなふうにまくしたてられたら彼が怖がるじゃないか」
──怖がる？なんで僕が自分と同じくらいの女の子を怖がらなくちゃあならないんだ。それに、肝心のメリッサはどうしたんだよ。なんで居ないんだ。やっぱり会わせてもらえないのか。　　　ムッとしたおかげで賢一はいつもの自分を取戻した。
「僕は怪しい者じゃあありません。」大きな声ではっきり宣言すると、賢一は軽く深呼吸して自己紹介を始めた。
「僕の名前は賢一、楠賢一です。メリッサさんのファンなんです。ショーを何度も見ました。会いに来ました。昨日の失礼はお詫びします。お願いします。何度も言いますが、怪しい者じゃあありません。ファンなんです！会わせて下さい」
賢一は、奥の部屋に隠れているのなら出てきてくれと、頭を下げた。
「なんなのよ、大きな声で！じゃあ、どうしてここの住所を知ってるの！怪しいわよ。友達だなんて、あんたなんかワタシ知らないわ！」「それは！……その…後を付けて…」
賢一はストーカーまがいの自分の行動を思い出してボソボソ言った。
「ほら、やっぱり！パパ、やっぱりコイツあいつらの仲間なのよ！」
彼女の鼻腔が大きく膨らみ、まるで拳銃でも取り出すかのように、上着の内側にさっと手を突っ込んだ。
「ｎｏ！違うよ」　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　「彼は違う。よく見なさい。彼は普通の人間だ」　　　　　　　ジェフリーと名乗った紳士は、眉間にしわをよせ振り向いた娘に大きく頷いた。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　「そうだ。彼はワタシ達とは違う」彼は賢一に顔をもどすと、もう一度頷いた。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　──はぁ？普通の人間ってなに！一般人ってこと？自分達は特別な人間だとでも言うのか？この子なんだよ。さっきから訳の分からん事ばっか言ってエラそうに！メリッサ！どうして出てきてくれないんだ！　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　賢一はだんだん腹が立ってきた。
「とにかく、僕は誰かの仲間じゃないし、メリッサの、いえ、メリッサさんのファンなんです」賢一は根気強く言った。
「メリッサさんのショーを観て、感動して、直接彼女に会いたくなったんです。後を付けたのは、店では会ってもらえなかったから…。本当に素晴らしかったんです、彼女のショー。夢があって、普通のマジックショーでは感じた事のない何か暖かいもので溢れてて、彼女のショーの後は優しい気持ちになれるんです。なんか、その…こんな気持ちになれたの初めてなんです」
母と食事が出来るようになってきたことを思い浮かべながら、賢一は一生懸命話した。
「それに、おばあちゃんに──」と言いかけて、メリッサが自分の死んだおばあちゃんに似ているということは黙っていようと思い直した。
何だかこの女の子に馬鹿にされるんじゃないかと思ったのだ。
「おばあちゃん？」ジェフリーは優しく問いかけた。
「あ…い…いえ、何でもありません。と…とにかくメリッサさんに会わせてくれませんか？お願いしましす！」
頭を下げる賢一をジェフリーはしばらくの間優しく見つめ、それから娘の方に顔を向けるとニッコリ微笑んだ。
彼女はいつの間にか怒りを消していた。父親と目が会うと、何故か顔を赤くして、スカートの裾をいじりながらちょっと肩をすくめた。
「しかし、後を付けるなんてずい分大胆だ」
賢一に向き直ると、ジェフリーは面白そうに言った。
「会いたいなら、ショーの後出口で待っていたらよかったのに。ほら、歌手とかのコンサートじゃあファンの子達がよく出口に群がっているじゃあないか」
ジェフリーは話しながら足をフットチェアーにヒョイと乗せた。
──やっぱ、ヘンだよな…何でこんな方法で……
ようやく少し落ち着いてきた賢一は、ふいにあの奇怪な出来事を思い出した。
後を付けようと決心させた理由はただ会いたいだけじゃなかった。もう一つの理由が……
──まったく！バカバカしい！魔法だなんて。
大ブームだった海外のファンタジー映画の影響だ！マジシャンだぞメリッサは！話せば笑われるか、ますますヘンな奴だと思われるか。……まぁいいか、笑いが起きればメリッサも出てきてくれるかもしれないし……
「実は──」と賢一は顔を上げると、最初から笑い話にするつもりで明るく話し出した。
「もちろん僕も何回か出口付近で隠れて待ってました。店長さん、会わせてくれなかったし。で、その待っている間なんですけど、ヘンな事が……あ、たぶん僕の見間違いなんですけど、その、不思議なことが起きて声を掛けそびれてしまったんです。その不思議な事が何かすごく気になって。確かめたかったつーか、知りたかったつーか、あ、やっぱりダメですよね」
「ほぉ、不思議な事？」ジェフリーは先を促すように笑顔で頷いた。
「え？えっと、だから…その…大きなカバンいやトランクか。そのトランクが勝手に空飛んで車に収まったり、そう！車のヘコミも勝手に直ったりしました。その…メ…メリッサさんがショーの時みたいに杖を振ったり、杖で触れたりした後で…だから…その…どうやったのかなァって…」
ジェフリーがじっと見つめるので、賢一の声はだんだんと小さくなっていった。何となく、部屋の空気も変わった気がした。
「どうやったのかなァって…、マジックの練習だとは？」
「練習？」
賢一が繰り返すと、ジェフリーは頷きながらニッコリ微笑んだ。
「あ、ああ、そりゃあ、そうですよね。ハハハ…、マジシャンですもんね。」──ははは…そうだよな…でも練習？あんなところで？
「そうそう」
「練習か…ア…でも…」
「でも？」
「い、いえ、たぶん僕の見間違いですけど…いや…でも電柱が一体どうやって…」
「電柱？」
「…えーっと……電柱が動いたんです」
「……」
「そう！そうなんです。電柱がピョンって、まるでメリッサさんの車をよけるみたいに！後で電柱触ってみたけど、なんの仕掛けもなかったし、それに、それに、あんな時に、あんな場所で練習っておかしくないですか？続けて見間違いなんてします？あれじゃあまるで、まるで本物の──」
興奮してきた賢一がイスを握り締め身を乗り出し時、奥の部屋で、何かがドサッと落ちる大きな音がした。
一瞬部屋がシーンと静まり返り、賢一は椅子に座り直し音の出どこらしい部屋を見つめた。だが、ジェフリーは何も聞こえなかったようにゆったりと椅子に腰掛けたままだった。
賢一が空耳だったかと思った途端、さっきまで戸口に突っ立ってたあの少女が、ものすごい勢いでその部屋に駆け寄り、中に入るとすぐに扉を閉めた。
ジェフリーは片方の眉を吊り上げ、目だけで少女の消えた扉をチラリと見たが、すぐに賢一の方へ視線を戻した。
しばらくの間ジェフリーは賢一を見つめていた。吸い込まれてしまいそうな青い眼だ。
海外の映画スターのような端正な顔にまじまじと見つめられ、賢一はドキドキして目をそらし、わけもなく両手を擦り合わせた。
やがてジェフリーは「お父さんはお元気ですか？」と唐突に尋ねた。
「は？」一瞬、何を聞かれたのか分らなかった。
「ケンイチ君のお父さんとお母さんはお元気ですか？」
「…は、はぁ、普通に元気ですよ」　　　　　　　　　　　　　「…どうして──」と賢一が言いかけた時、さっきの扉の向こうからくぐもった話し声が聞こえて来た。
賢一の心臓は、追加の血液を送り出したのかどくんどくんと音が聞こえそうになった。
──メリッサだ！やっぱり隠れてた。
賢一は期待顔で扉を見つめた。
何かがシュッと賢一の顔の側を過ったのを感じたが、何？と思う前に扉がバンッと開いた。
「メリッサ、ローズ！出て来なさい！」
ジェフリーが奥の部屋に向かって声を掛けると、ゆっくりと扉が開いた。少女があの大きなフランス人形を抱いて、恐る恐る出てきた。
「メリッサ、一体どういう事か説明して欲しいネ」怒ってはいないが、ジェフリーの声はきっぱりとした口調だった。
「あー、と…そのォ…」少女は黙り込んだ。
メリッサ本人の登場を想像していた賢一は、ガッカリした。と、その時、信じられない事が起きた。
「ジェフ、メリッサを叱らないで、ほんの二、三回の事なのよ」
そう言いながら大きなフランス人形が、少女の腕からスルリと降り立ったのだ。
驚きのあまり賢一はジェットコースターに乗った時のように、背もたれに背中を押し付けた。息は吸ったまま吐き出すのを忘れてしまった。すると、どこからか小さなサルが風のように走って来て、ジェフリーの肩にさっと飛び乗った。昨日少女と一緒に居たあのサルだ。
「お前、メリッサのお目付役やろ！何やってんねん、人に見られるなんて」
子ザルは人間みたいに腕を組んで、人形に向かってキィーキィーと甲高い声でしゃべった。
目玉がこぼれ落ちそうなくらい賢一は目を見開いていた。
──に、人形が……サ…サルが……
あれだけ速く打っていた心臓の鼓動が感じられない、もしかしたら驚きのあまり止まってしまったのかもしれない。
人形はその場で固まっている賢一（こっちの方がよっぽど人形に見える。）には目もくれないで、目の前をテケテケと歩いている。
「ネェ、ジェフ。時間がなかったのよ。評判がいいのよ、だからアンコールも多くて。ジェフ、メリッサはけっして軽々しい気持ちで約束を破ったんじゃないわ」
ローズと呼ばれた人形は、すがるようにジェフリーの脚に小さな手を置いた。
「やっぱり、オレの方がいいんちゃうか？オレの方が人の気配に敏感やし、ローズみたいなヘマせえへんで」　　　　　　　　　ジェフリーの肩の上で子ザルがバカにするように歯をみせて言った。
「何よ！うるさいわネ！アタシはジェフと話してんの！それにメリッサがアタシを……」
「もともとショーの相棒はオレやったんや、それをお前が…」
「アタシとの方が上品なショーが作れるの！」
口を一文字にぎゅっと結んで、目は限界まで見開き、賢一は二人？二匹？のやり取りを眺めていた。途中で英語になったりしてよく分からない部分があったが、彼らは賢一を無視して勝手に言い争っている。
──待って！ちょっと待って！何だコレ？夢、夢でも見ているの僕は……そうか…そうだこれは夢だ。
賢一は椅子に縛り付けられたように、身動き出来ないでいた。
どのくらい経ったのか分からない。ジェフリーは軽く溜め息を付き、唇の上に自分の人差し指をスッと滑らした、それから、ローズと子ザルの向かってその指をパチンと鳴らした。
すると彼らの口が、まるで糊ずけしたようにピタッとくっついた。
ジェフリーは静かな声で少女に話し掛けた。
「とにかく、ショー以外で魔法を使ったんだね」
「ご、ごめんなさい。ちゃんと確かめたんだけど、誰も居ないと思って。く、車はタケルおじさまのだし、ラバン草が見つかったって聞いて、早く手に入れたくて、パパの薬を早く…」
「メリッサ、分かっているよ。パパの事思ってくれているのはとても嬉しい。でも、一緒に決めたルールを覚えているだろう？」
彼らも賢一の存在を、まるで忘れてしまったかのように話していた。──ま、魔法だって？
「いいかい、ショーの中ではどんな魔法もマジックで通せる。ありえない事も何か仕掛けがあるのだろうと思ってくれるんだ」
ここでジェフリーはちょっと言葉を切ると、悲しげに続けた。
「メリッサ、パパの具合が良くなってからでもいいんだよ。無理してキミがステージに立たなくても。薬草はもうじき揃う、そうすれば…」「いいの！」メリッサは大きな声で言った。
「ワタシが早く捜し出したいの！」
ジェフリーは短くフゥと息を吐き、髪を掻き上げて言った。
「だったら。気を付けてほしい。おまえの魔力は半人前だ。魔法は、よほどの事がないかぎりショー以外で使わない！Ｏ・Ｋ？」
「う、うん！パパ。本当にごめんなさい」
「分かってくれたのならもういい、おいで。愛しているよ」ジェフリーは近づいて来た娘を優しく抱きしめた。
賢一はこれは夢だと思い込もうとする努力を諦め、自分を無視して展開されるこの光景を、今流行りの海外ドラマだと思い込もうとしていた。─ハハ…魔法だって…
「ところで賢一クン、キミのことだが…」ジェフリーは娘から離れると急に賢一の方に顔を向けた。
「オヤ？どうしたの」
突然、現実に引き戻された賢一は、金縛りが解けたようにビックリして立ち上がったが、よろけて尻餅を付くみたいな感じで再び椅子に呼び戻された。
しばらく口を開けたままだったからか、口の中がカラカラで声が出ない。
「まぁ、キミが見たり聴いたりした事を、魔法で忘れさせる事はカンタンなんだが……」
話しながらジェフリーは、唐突に賢一の両親の事を尋ねた時のように、ちょっと不思議な目付きで賢一を見つめた。
それから、ニッコリと微笑んで「キミは誰にも言わないでしょう」と言った。
「パパ！どうして──」少女が何か言掛けるのを手で制して「ね！」とジェフリーは賢一に再び笑い掛けた。
賢一はカラクリ人形のように奇妙な頷き方をした。それから、何度も唾を飲み込んでから、恐る恐る尋ねた。
「ほ…本当なの？ほ…ほ…本当の…魔法使いな…の？」
ジェフリーは返事の替わりに、魅力的なウインクを賢一に送ると、身振り手振りでまだ喧嘩しているローズ達に向かって、もう一度指をパチンと鳴らした。
急に口が聞けるようになった彼らが同時に叫んだのは『このチビ！』だった。
賢一は子供のように『イィーダッ』をしているローズ達を、まるでＣＧ映画のように感じながら「じゃあ、今まで見たマジックはやっぱり……」と呟いた。
「まぁ、そういう事だな。タネも、仕掛けも必要ないからね」
呟きを質問だと思ったのか、ジェフリーは肩をすくめるとわざわざ教えてくれた。
視線を感じて少女のほうを見ると、彼女は納得出来ないという顔で、足を組んでソファに座っていた。
話す事はもう終わりと、ジェフリーは立ち上がり窓の方にいくと、どこからともなく小さなパンを取り出した。
電線に止まるスズメのように、フラワーボックスに並んでいる五羽のカラスが、ジェフリーの頭越しに見える。
「ところで、メリッサ」カラスにパンをちぎって与えながら、ジェフリーは娘に話し掛けた。
「時間は大丈夫なのかい？」
メリッサとローズは同時に柱時計に目をやり同時に「ＯＨ！」と声をあげた。
ジェフリーはカラス達を送り出すと、指揮者のように指をひと振りして、部屋中のカーテンを一気に閉めた。
それから、壁際のライディングデスクの上に置かれていた小さな手鏡を持ってきた。離れた所から見ても、見事な彫刻が施されているのが分かる。
賢一は今だ夢心地で、ジェフリーの一連の動きを眺めていた。
ジェフリーは娘に手鏡をもたせると、全身が映せる大きな姿見の前に立たせた。
そして、自分の手を彼女の頭に乗せ何か呪文のようなものをと唱えた。
恐ろしい事が起きた。
少女の身体が一瞬ブルッと震えたかと思ったら、みるみるうちに背丈が十センチほど伸びた。髪が白くなり始め、顔には線を描くようにシワが刻まれていった。
髪全体が真っ白な雪のようになると、そこには、賢一があれほど会いたかったメリッサ・クレイトンが立っていた。
「あぁ！メリッサ！」賢一は立ち上がって叫んだ。
「当たり前やないか、今まで寝てたんか？メリッサはメリッサや！アホ！」
賢一の背後から妙に甲高い声がした。
いつの間にか、小さなサルが賢一の座っていた椅子の背もたれに座り、呆れたように喋っていた。
叫んだ口を閉じる間もなく再び叫ぶ羽目になったので、賢一は「ハガッ！」という奇声を発し椅子から飛び退いた。
驚く賢一を子ザルは歯を見せてヒヒヒと笑った。
──マジでサルだ…目…デカッ……メガネザルだっけ？
賢一がサルから目が離せないでいると、扉の閉まる音がした、振り向くとメリッサの姿がない。着替えに行ったのだと親切にローズだと名乗る人形が教えてくれた。
ジェフリーは大きなトランクケースを二個空中から出現させ、柔らかな絨毯にゆっくりと下ろした。とほぼ同時、隅にある物置らしい折れ戸が勝手に開いた。
ガタガタという音と共に、いろんな物が中から飛び出して来る。帽子、トランプ、剣、折りたたみ机、縫いぐるみ……どれもマジックで使う物らしい。
一見何の変哲もない小道具だが、魔法が掛けられているのだろう、それぞれが意思を持っているかのように、トランクの中にキッチリと収まるように順に入っていった。
目の前で起きる光景を、賢一はまだ映画のワンシーンとしか受け入れられないでいた。
背中にサルと人形の気配を感じていたが、なるべく気にしないようにしていたし、見ないようにしていた。
「ちょっとチェス！あんたまたそんなもの食べて」　　　　　　──パリパリ…パリパリ…
どうにもいい音がして、賢一は恐る恐る振り返った。
子ザルが、どこかで見覚えのある煎餅をバリバリ食べている。
じっと見ていると、子ザルがムキッと歯を見せて笑った。
「よっ！オレはチェス。よろしくな！おまえも食べるか？なかなか美味いんやで、鹿センベイ」
──鹿センベイ…やっぱり…
賢一は無言でただ首を横に振った。
メリッサが魔女風の衣装で「もう、間に合わないワ」と叫びながら出て来た。
「ワタシが送ろう。ケンイチくん、あのオープンカフェの近くで、人があまり来ない場所はあるかい？」
ジェフリーはしゃべりながら、ライディングデスクの引き出しから四つ折りになった紙を取り出した。
「……」　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　「ケンイチクン？」　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　「え？」「もうっ！！人があまり来ない場所はどこ？って、聴いてるの！」メリッサが叱るように言った。　　　　　　　　　　「あ、あぁ…」映画の視聴者気分だった賢一は、いきなり出演者になった。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　──ええっと…人の来ない……あったかなァ…？
まともではないこの状況に呆然とし、夢の中で自分の役を演じているような気分だった。ふーん…場所を思い出す場面だね。　　賢一はこの間行くつもりだったラーメン店の側に、何年も空家になっている古い喫茶店があったのを思い出した。たしか、表通りの方に移転し、今はそこを倉庫として使っていると聞いたことがある。
「あ…空家…なら…空家ならどうかな？」
「グレイト！いいね！正確な位置を示してくれるかい？」と、ジェフリーは地図らしき紙を広げて賢一に手渡した。
地図を受け取った瞬間、思わず落っことしそうになった。真っ白いただの紙に地図が浮かび上がって来る最中だったからだ。
数秒後には、カフェ付近の地図が五千分の一くらいの大きさで現れた。
ドキドキしながら地図を眺めているとすぐに場所が分かった。
「ここです。『喫茶エンゼル』何年も倉庫として使われてるって聞いてます」
ジェフリーは地図をのぞき込み場所を確認すると、示された場所にペンで印を付け、足元の絨毯に地図を広げた。
ペンで付けた印はすぐに蛍光色のように光り始めた。
次にジェフリーは、ローズを抱いたメリッサを賢一の側に呼び、大きなトランク二個を彼らの目の前に置いた。
それから、さっき聞いた耳慣れない言葉を呟いた。すると地図の周りが蜃気楼みたいに揺らめき始めた。
「さあ、いいかい！ワン・ツー・スリーで飛び込んで」ジェフリーが言った。
「手」メリッサが隣の賢一にぶっきらぼうに言った。
「手を繋ぐのワタシと！反対の手でトランクのどこでもいいから触って」
賢一は訳が分からず焦っていると、メリッサがさっと右手を握って来た。
何で僕も？と戸惑いながらも、左手でトランクを触ったとたん、目の前の地図がドンドン大きく引き伸ばされていった。
ただ、そう思ったのは間違いだった。地図が大きくなってきたのではなく、自分たちがドンドン小さく縮んでいったのだった。
「う、うわぁ！」
叫ぶのと同時に、身体の中に自分自身が吸い込まれてゆくような感覚が賢一を襲った。
まるで、マッハで飛ぶ戦闘機に乗っているようだ。
ダ、ダメだ…吐く…そう思った時、耳が壊れそうなくらい大きな声が辺りに響きわたった。
「そら！今だ。ワン・ツー・スリー！」
メリッサがグイッと賢一の手を引っ張った。
飛び込むというより、つんのめって前のめりになったまま、賢一は暗い空間へ引きずられていった。
吐き気が収まると、今度は無重力の中を歩いているみたいに身体がフワフワしてきた。踏みしめる足場がなく、小さな頃海で溺れたことを思い出し不安になりかけたが、ほどなく意識が遠のいた。──④へつづく

時間が出来るといつも島に行きたくなる。橋が開通してから
１００回は間違いなく行っている。海が綺麗で道も綺麗で癒される所があって、美味しいものもあって、
のんびりした生活があって、信号もほとんど無くて、混んでなくて。
いい事だらけ。距離はうんと近いけど、日常生活を忘れる場所です。年明けの正月は例によって御手洗に行った。
御手洗神社に行ってもだれもいなかった。外出して歩いている人はほとんど見かけなかった。寒かったけどその寒さが心地良かった。
海を眺めていると心がゆったりして来る。住んでいる近くにこの様な場所がある事に感謝感謝。
